Nine workers at Glenn Heights Fire Department quit in wake of chief

firing

Eds: NEW for PMs.

kgmss

DALLAS (AP) - Five part-time and four volunteer firefighters have

quit working at the Glenn Heights Fire Department, saying they refuse to work

without Chief Mike Burgett, who was fired last week.

Former volunteer firefighter Mark Dunn said all of the department's

17 volunteers plan to quit. All five of the department's part-time staff already

have quit.

It has forced the department to rely on help from other cities to

fill the gaps because the part-time and volunteer workers staffed the department

during business hours.

Burgett, a former Glenn Heights mayor, was fired Dec. 11 to clear

the way for establishing a Department of Public Safety and transition to a

full-time department, city officials said.

Burgett said he was fired after taking a month's leave of absence so

he and his wife could get medical treatment in Florida for their 18-month-old

son, Cole, who has an underdeveloped brain because of oxygen deprivation.

``I had no idea they were going to do that until I got back,''

Burgett said. ``When I left, everything was on track for the Fire Department to

go full time.''

Glenn Heights, a city of about 7,000 people, is located in southwest

Dallas County.
