Former volunteer firefighter Mark Dunn said all of the department's 17 volunteers plan to quit. All five of the department's part-time staff already have quit. It has forced the department to rely on help from other cities to fill the gaps because the part-time and volunteer workers staffed the department during business hours. Burgett, a former Glenn Heights mayor, was fired Dec. 11 to clear the way for establishing a Department of Public Safety and transition to a full-time department, city officials said. Burgett said he was fired after taking a month's leave of absence so he and his wife could get medical treatment in Florida for their 18-month-old son, Cole, who has an underdeveloped brain because of oxygen deprivation. ``I had no idea they were going to do that until I got back,'' Burgett said. ``When I left, everything was on track for the Fire Department to go full time.'' Glenn Heights, a city of about 7,000 people, is located in southwest Dallas County. AP-WS-12-18-00 1148EST
