Guest guest
I've been reluctant to put this out there but need to do it before I start confusing people, especially at Autscape: about 18 months ago I ordained as a Buddhist nun. About a month ago I returned my robes and my vows, meaning I am no longer a nun. I feel it's time I returned to using my lay name on lists - Ruth. What I did when I changed my name before was to put my previous name in brackets for a while to remind everyone needing reminding; this is what I will do again. I was under the vague understanding that Buddhist nuns do not necessarily serve for a lifetime, and many go back to secular life. - s who has trouble believing in the reincarnation bit... maybe I'll believe in it next lifetime. Guest guest
> Hi Ruth, > > I love your screen name " Autiste " . Where do you live now? I'm in a farmhouse (as a lodger), in West Yorkshire/south Pennines. Actually only a couple of miles from the castle where I was before, but further out of town. It's such a beautiful area, steep imposing hills all around. The farmhouse is up a gravelled and puddly residential lane, kind of tucked into a corner with it's own steep fields on two sides. It's the only house on the lane with significant land and presumably used to have the land the other houses are now on (as it's the oldest house on the lane). When the railway was being built 18 people lived in this house - which is somewhat unbelievable. It's a big house but not *that* big! I'm currently bottlefeeding four lambs plus topping up a tiny one with a somewhat useless mother. And I'm looking for voluntary work. I think I would call that a rationalization rather than logic. The logic might involve looking at the physics of the accident -- who was where in relation to the impact, the design and materials of the vehicle(s) involved, the speed of impact, etc. Jane

I took it to mean that it was up to me to recognise the Buddha-nature in every living being I interacted with or came across in any way, as well as my own when I was feeling hopeless, negative or defeated. Guest guest
I was curious about this also, so I looked up the Buddhist sect in question. It was widely criticised, in very general terms, suggesting that it had degenerated into a personality cult. However, in Buddhism, there is a prohibition of " speaking of the faults of others " so one is unlikely to find out the particulars if one is not directly involved. If this degeneration into a personality cult is true, this is not unique to that group or even to Buddhism. Such deterioratoin is an unfortunate development in many religious groups. I've seen similar deterioration in groups based on Christiainty, Judiasm, Native American spirituality, even in Unitarian Universalism. Also I've seen it in secular groups, even workplaces. Just an unfortunate human tendancy, I guess. Since we (autistics) don't play personality cult games as well as NT folks, and such games are often odious to us (as autistics), we often wind up serving as the canary in the coal mine when such personality cults develop. -- Joni ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Guest guest
Joni- Great analogy! I can relate- been the canary - got knocked unconscious- gotten the Tee-shirt-... Thankfully, every group is not like that. And, I have learned to walk off when things begin to look like that too much. It took me decades to learn. It makes me all the more thankful when I am involved in a group that is not like this! joni pinkney wrote: Also I've seen it in secular groups, even workplaces. Yes, of course ... but science can't get beyond the hows to the whys. It's kind of amusing that when science changes its mind about something it's called progress and when religion evolves it's seen as proof that all religion/spirituality is bull. (I know this isn't what you're saying, Jane. Just a thought that occured) I'm enjoying Batchelor's book " Buddhism Without Beliefs " at present. It gets beyond the religious trappings to where Gautama Buddha was coming from - before there was such a thing as Buddhism as a religion.
