(I replied to Debra and Jane yesterday afternoon, but somehow that post got lost.) I did see a Doctor at the VA today, and brought to her a couple of pages I'd just run off my computer from Google about PAD - Peripheral Arterial Disease. I really think that's what the problem is. My right leg has Always been 1/2 inch shorter than the other. It probably compensates for the scoliosis I'va always had. The old fracture in my hip occurred in 1969, and hasn't bothered me in all that time since. My legs felt heavy and very tired, and I was feeling short of breath during this 2 hour fast-paced route walking. Going to have a stress test done on Tuesday the 23rd. Going to have an ultra-sound done to check the arteries on 8th Feb. Going to have an MRI done to check the fracture (soon). Already joined Stop Smoking Clinic, will start with Zyban on the 31st Jan, quit date is 14th February. Have started mall-walking today as exercise to get legs back in shape, improve circulation. Other possible solutions are to bring down cholesterol, (mine was 275 or so last time), or a couple of drugs, or angioplasty, or a stent. It's apparent that I really, really Need to quit smoking, or I'll end up sucking on an oxygen tank. Might not live to collect all that money back from Social Security. (That would just KILL me!!!) ;-) After I finished at the VA, I went to the Guard company, and let them know I was doing all that I could to solve the problem, and left those pages about PAD with her, so as to be totally upfront about it all. Guest guest
I hear you on quitting smoking, it's a tough one. Zyban works pretty good (mild side effects for me). Good luck with the tests. Walking should help a lot. (Stretches, even while lying on the couch keeps one limber and flexible!) Keep at 'er, you'll be in shape in no time. a > Thanks to everyone who replied. (I replied to Debra and Jane > yesterday afternoon, but somehow that post got lost.) Good luck with that! Walking has many benefits. During much of the year, one may encounter cats who want petting, for example. :-) Jane

The mall walking, the smoking/ceasing. This reminds me of a comic I saw in the newspaper. A man says to his friend: I tried 'the patch' to quit smoking, but I find that this smoke-alarm-hat is a lot more effective. The guy has a smoke alarm strapped to his head. Good luck. I'll have to try that. (Or, at least, tell the joke in the Stop Smoking class.) Clay
