Guest guest
Hang in there, Bonnie! I completely understand. We are dealing with my Mom who has had LBD for about 11 years, my mother in law who had hip replacement surgery,a nd my father in law who has Alzheimers. I just hope my health holds out, because a lot falls on our shoulders. Regards from cloudy NY, Helene > > We are continuing to try to find some relief for my husband from his > abdominal pain. Guest guest
Bonnie, How did the Doctor visit go with your husband? Just wondered if he is doing better now that you have changed his diet. I was curious how you knew it was food? Hugs, Donna R Cared for Mom 3 years in my home and the last year at a nh. She passed away from LBD in 2002. Possible solution to bloat/pain We are continuing to try to find some relief for my husband from his abdominal pain. We may have found the problem, if not, part of the problem. First, we tried a glucose free diet with not much if any difference. The second food change was to remove diary foods from his diet and in one weeks time, I can see a big difference in him (even though he is still complaining of discomfort). I do notice that he is being more active. Activity was one of the items that seemed to increase his pain, so I have hope. Weight loss (for both of us) would be a good thing also and may well help too. I have more information to research, however, I have been told it can take up to 6 months for discomfort to go away, once the offending foods are identified. We realize the problems with slow digestion. His daily schedule of extra fiber and stool softeners is working, or at least appears that way. We go back to the Dr. next week and I am anxious to see what she has to say. Life here has been crazy... my health is all of a sudden throwing me some curves too. If it isn't one thing, it is another! Bonnie
Guest guest
Hi Donna, The Doctor visit went well though now we are moving on to the next set of problems. I'm sending another message/topic for that one. Lee continues to improve. He is working more, and not sitting in his recliner to relieve the discomfort. It is good to see him being more active. As to how I figured out it was diet... it was a guessing game. He had already had upper and lower GI scoping. He had been to the Urologist. His General Practitioner had seen him several times and all the Doctors had given up as they did not know what it could be. There just was not much more to try. I love to take on challenges... it is just my nature. I had already tried removing the gassy foods, with no luck. We tried a gluten free diet for over a month with no relief. I had decided he was going to try a lactose free diet next. I figured it would be harder to convince him to do this as he is an ice cream lover, however, he stuck with the diet for the most part. I did find ice cream missing one time, but, if he ate it, he is the one that suffered. He is reading labels now, and, staying lactose free. I bought him some chocolate coated raisins... you know... for a pleasant treat and help for the constipation, and he got into them one evening/night. He told me he " over did the raisins " and informed me they have milk in them. After starting the lactose free diet I could see a difference in his abdomen within 24 hours. He is now down to a normal look, however, he is still painful. We talked with the Doctor about this, and she reinforced what I had been told about it taking a long time for the intestines to repair themselves after being stretched from the bloating. I know he still hurts but, he is much more active. What a relief after 2 years of his complaining of pain. The bloating and pain was becoming more intense with time. Poor guy! Just believe me that it is much easier to cook a lactose free diet than a gluten free one. That was a pain! He is still waltzing around the community with his suspendered jeans unbuttoned and zipper half way down. (He covers that all up with sweatshirts... his idea of dressing up the past 5 or 10 years has been his plaid sweatshirt). I bought him new jeans 3 sizes larger but he continues to wear his old jeans as they are not worn out enough to toss yet. I hope to see him go back down at least 2 sizes as his discomfort wains. Guest guest
I feel a little responsible for recommending the choclate covered raisins and I'm sorry they caused a problem. Before went into the hospital one of his daytime caregivers suggested a dairy free diet because of 's " bowel problems " . I came home one day and declared he was going dairy free.Okay. So I had a fridge full of dairy products and half the dishes I cook contain dairy products and he wants to go dairy free, including eggs. I don't think he would have given up ice cream or choclate, though. We never had a chance to find out Dark choclate is supposed to be lactose free but it's not to everybody's taste. > > > > > >Bonnie, > > > >How did the Doctor visit go with your husband?
