Guest guest
Is there any history of Reglan and LBD? We are in the 3rd year of care with my MIL (I got a lot of help here early on) and her dementia seems to have " leveled off " somewhat, but the issue of a hernia from an old gall bladder surgery (hernia was fixed once and has reoccurred) is now becoming the driving force in her care. The hernia is almost the size of a watermelon and they do not want to do surgery because of her age (82) and the fact that there are other organs which are involved with the hernia. She has begun to be constipated quite often - to the point that caregivers have to use enema to break up blockage about every week. UTI's are constant now and she is on constant low dose antibiotic to try and keep that under control. The Reglan was prescribed today to possibly help with the sluggish bowel. When I read the side effects, alarms went off in my head and I wanted to see if anyone else had experience with Reglan and LBD. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Ann, Reglan is to be avoided for those with parkinsonism. It's antidopaminergic and can make the parkinsonism symptoms lots worse. Has your MIL ever tried Miralax? It's available OTC and is thought by many to be a miracle drug for dealing with constipation. Robin > > Is there any history of Reglan and LBD? Guest guest
Hi Ann, Have you tried miralax yet? If not please do it works great for many people with this (constipation is a big problem for many). Also there's an alternative that might work in place of raglan - amitiza which is expensive but less problematic for LBD. My mil does ok with amatiza when things are stopped up. It can be taken as maintenance or as a weekly cleanout with dulcolax sup. Also we have used dulcolax suppository for those days that nothing would budge it - and that works well and within a couple of hours without problems for LBD - or at least no problems for my mil. I would not touch reglan with LBD and would be very afraid of trying it at all, let alone have her on it routinely. My mil had terrible constipation but we have it managed really well with miralax every day. We don't have to use a stool softener anymore either. Sure hope you find a good balance of stuff that keeps things moving along! Guest guest
Dear Ann- I would definitely avoid Reglan. I myself have had a bad experience with it, and this from a doctor on a Parkinsons caregivers site (www.pdcaregiver.org): There are three classes of drugs that are likely to produce Parkinsonism: 1. Dopamine receptor blocking agents, including the phenothiazines (such as Compazine, Stelazine, and Thorazine), butyrophenones (such as Haldol), and metoclopramide (Reglan). 2. Dopamine-depleting agents, including reserpine (rarely used) and tetrabenazine (used to control dyskinesia) 3. Drugs that act by various known and unknown mechanisms, including the atypical antipsychotic drugs such as Resperidal, Orap, and Zyprexa). Since LBD and Parkinsons have such a strong alliance, it could very possibly have a poor outcome for your MIL. Carol Daughter of . Diagnosed LBD 2005. Guest guest
We have had wonderful success with Miralax. Many pharmacies market their own brands, which are much cheaper than the name brand. BJ's has its own brand, so cheap that the savings on this product make up for the cost of membership. My husband has been using it for years, with continuing daily results. I put the daily dose in a yogurt cup of Activia, so he gets two benefits in one. Marcia C.
