- Ativan is a benzodiazepine used for anxiety. It acted in reverse for

my dad causing very strong behaviors, hallucinations, and anger. My dad acted

out physically. He was what I considered to be a crazy man on Ativan. I knew

no different about the drug and when I signed into the group in January 2002 it

was topic of conversation so I had it stopped for my dad. It took a lot through

the NH where he lived to get it stopped, they were convinced it was helping him.

Unfortunately the adverse reactions were irreversible and I'm convinced it was

the Ativan that lead to my dad's demise. He was on a downhill spiral while on

the Ativan and it continued, even though I had it stopped, and passed away in

September 2002. Keep in mind, this is only my experience. Sandie

It is so hard for the NH staff to accept that ativan does have an opposite

effect on some patients, and that response may not go away. Because LBD is

misdiagnosed and misunderstood, it is often given and discovered too late.

The problem in many NH is that if a drug like Ativan is ordered, the staff feels

it should be given. Many times there is not regular staff, maybe even agency

staff caring for a patient. When they see a patient agitated or starting to get

worked up- they look on the med sheet to see if there is something to give the

patient to calm them before the behavior escalates.

The sad part is, the medication does escalate the behavior and it does not get

documented properly or is missed or ignored by the staff.

That it why it is so important for the family to learn and advocate for their

family member. As you go along, the family members are the experts and will

teach the medical professionals about the disease.

Hi - The memories all flooded back when I read the word Ativan in this

group. It was a very tough time and I prayed for guidance to say the right

words to help my dad. Of course my thought was to stand up and smack some sense

into each and every one of them. I suppose the prayers brought the words out

and cemented me into my seat. Thank you so much for your words of support,

really means a lot to me. I felt the NH started the fight by calling the

meeting with no warning to me and I was determined to finish the fight with my

dad being the winner. Again, thank you for your kind words they have really

touched my heart today! Sandie
