Hi ,

It's difficult to have to deal with a parent that is 'acting out.'

I would suggest you review the topics in the group and print out the list of

medications, that have recommended to use. I would make sure that the doctor is

Lewy Body savy.

My Dad has done this a few times and I suggested to his doctor to start him out

on Seroquel. He began with 25mg then progressed to 50mg in the morning and it

has really helped him. Some people can't tolerate it, but I have found that many

of my patients in the nursing home have less anxiety and less agitation with it.

I'm a hospice nurse and I see many patients with LBD and Alzheimers. When you

find the right medication, it makes like a little easier for the patient, family

and the people who take care of them.

Most of the spouses on this forum have much more information than I do because

they have been there. I'm sure many will be able to assist you. I pray that he

will be better before you have to go home.

had what they call an 'aggressive episode' this morning by riping a railing off

and hitting the wall. They have asked he go for a 24 hour pscy hold. The nuring

home does not have a night nurse so he has been unable to get his 2 am meds. Not

sure if this has anything to do with it. He has had aggessive hallucinations,

that is why he had to move to the home. It was unsafe for him and my step mom

for him to stay home. He has even tried to get out of the car while moving. I

live in London, will be there on Monday. Just looking for any other advice on

what to do. Don't know what to do if the home won't take him back, he could go

home but seems to get more aggresive with help in his home. I have a 2 yr old

and a 3 yr old so don't feel that moving back to help with the care would be

much help. Feeling helpless.

Hi ,

Everyone is different, so I'm not sure this will be a help, but times when my

husband was aggressive, he was not given his meds. on time, if at all, and when

he had a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Also, if your dad has had Ativan or on Ativan it can also make them very

aggressive, many get adverse reactions to Ativan. In nursing homes you need to

watch what the doctors prescribe, most of them are not aware of LBD sensitivites

to medications. My husband was always very aggressive after anesthetics, even

for minor surgery in and out in a day; like for hernias.

If any of this sounds like it could be a reason, you should look into it.

Hi Janet,

Why was your Dad placed in that particular home if they and your Mom know that

he needs medication at 2 AM and they do not have a nurse there at night to

administer it?  The situation sounds as if this particular placement is not a

workable option. It seems to me you need to search for a facility that has a

nurse on location at all times.  Perhaps you will be able to help your Mom find

a better staffed placement for your father.

Also, was your father taken for the 24 hour psych eval at a place familiar with

LBD?  Does your father have a definite diagnosis by a neurologist or geriatric

psychiatrist of having LBD?  Or are they just calling it dementia or

alzheimers?

My thoughts and well wishes go with you and your family,

Pat
