Just want to note: I had experience in the past that tells me it's not always the laziness (or " convenience " ) of the reception staff that is at fault. When someone in that position does try to respond to the needs of the patients, xe may be treated as stupid (or even punished) by those (e.g., doctors, sometimes nurses) who are using xem as a preliminary gatekeeper to protect them from unwanted " demands " of patients. A receptionist in that position quickly learns that it is part of xyr job to be obstructive. Xe is praised for that behavior and soon (as a kind of self-protection) may take on the attitude of those above xem in the hierarchy: that some patients will try to get special treatment, are just complainers, are drug abusers, etc., and therefore all patients must be treated with a measure of suspicion and kept in line. :-( Jane
Guest guest
Genyin, I am glad for you. Sometimes doing the thing that feels wrong gives the example that tells us the right way to do it! In high school, there was a word I just never got right- and once, I made myself guess the one that felt wrong- and I got it correct. I have remembered it ever since. I knew the prescription line wouldn't be open yet and thought it opened at 1pm; also knew that how i was feeling and having been awake until 5am with a hacking painful cough I might well be unable to phone by then. So I called anyway. Oh boy, that receptionist tried so hard not to accomodate me! I told her I have autism and she tried the not making special cases line " everybody will be trying it on ... " and I said lightly, " stop being so silly! " . Lol, unplanned but somehow it worked. She said she'd look up my records and see if my autism/needs were stated, which they are, and then took details of the meds I need and I should have them later today. It was almost entertaining, though still more faff than I want when I'm ill. I really want to say something to her along the lines of, my goodness, wouldn't there be total anarchy if the system responded to the needs of the patients rather than the convenience of the reception staff ... Guest guest
The doctors at the practice near me refuse to record Asperger Syndrome on my medical records. It is an hour and a half to the next surgery, so i have no choice. There is no understanding that this is important information for health care, although curiously they allowed me to take photos for a presentation on health care for medical professionals. Needless to say, they were not interested in actually seeing the presentation although one of the clients modelled for me. > > Well I'm pretty unwell right now so I'm amazed I swung quite a > diplomatic triumph this morning :-) > > I had to phone the GP surgery for a prescription that isn't on repeat. > I knew the prescription line wouldn't be open yet and thought it > opened at 1pm; also knew that how i was feeling and having been awake > until 5am with a hacking painful cough I might well be unable to phone > by then. I suggest you make a formal written complaint, with the assistance of either your local Citizen's Advice Bureau or a disability advocacy service. Also make sure they (GP surgery) have documentation of your formal diagnosis from the person or agency that diagnosed you. Then even if it's not at the front of your records at least it's in there - they aren't allowed to throw away such things.
