Guest guest
Hi all: I don't post often and tend to be more of a lurker, but I do read all of your posts and feel for what each of you are going through or have been through with your loved ones on this very difficult journey. I have a question about Prednizone (sp?). Have any of you had experience with it with your family member? My Mom who is 94 yrs old and in a care center has had a very bad respiratory infection for the past two weeks with terrible, terrible coughing (sounded like pheumonia to me) but the nurses & doctors say it isn't. I'm thinking 'aspiration pheumonia'. First they were giving her only breathing treatments as they thought it was needed, then they put her on a Z-Pac and finally Prednizone and breathing treatments 3 times daily. She is very slowly getting better, but has been extremely agitated and has not slept much at all since being on the Prednizone. I think today was her last day to be on it, and I'm hoping she will start to be less agitated and will start to sleep some again. I have lost the list of bad drugs for LBD'ers and was wondering if this is one of the 'no-no' dru and if so I will make sure that they do not give it to her in the future. Thanks for any input you have.
Guest guest
Hi Patti, To my knowledge, predinisone isn't a real bad drug for LBD - however it can cause these things of sleeplessness, irritability and more in anyone taking it. My mil does ok with it - irritable and cranky sometimes and doesn't sleep (she doesn't sleep anyway). In the ER the doctor gave her an injection - a lot all at once and she really got anxious and was wanting to get up and go now. So if there's a next time they start out with less and work up to the desired effect and hopefully avoid that high anxiety. Did they do a chest xray for your mother? I sure hope she feels better soon. The prednisone will take a few days to leave her system. Guest guest
Thank you Dorothy for your input, and I'm glad to know that Prednizone is not one of the 'bad drugs'.  I will mention to the nurse in charge of the unit where she is to start slowly the next time if she should need another new med. I sometimes forget this part, but this particular nurse is very good at talking with me and listening to me, so I am forutnate in this way. Yes, I hope she gets better soon, because I know this coughing has just worn her out and so has the sleeplessness. It's been so hard to see her cough like this and to see her so upset much more than usual.
