> Hi everyone , I am so glad to be part of this support group but there are

times when the posts make me so sad. I cry most of the time that I am away from

my mom watching her deteriorate. The one thing that my mom still has most of the

time is a sense of humar. She passes gas constantly . She is not afraid to pass

gas even at the worst times like when i am bending down to pull her pants up.

She laughs all the time too. She also is constantly wanting me to trim her hair

in her private area. I swear if she was of right mind she would die if she knew

the things she asks of me. The times there is laughter help me get through the

very sad moments. I would love to hear from any of you funny moments cause

sometimes you just have to LAUGH. Thank you

We had a recent funny, that hopefully you didn't have to be there for to get the

humor of! Dad has been doing fairly well, but is somewhat in and out at times,

for lack of a better description (and a longer one), and his voice has really

lost a lot of its strength, especially when he is speaking with familiar people.

So the other day during a perfectly lucid moment, when Mom and my husband were a

little ways away playing cards, Dad asked me if I had played in my car lately.

HUH??? I DID have a new car though, so wasn't sure if he meant my music CD's,

or what he was trying to ask. So I said I wasn't sure what he said and he

repeated the question. " Have you played in your car lately? " Hmm. Umm...he

seemed so good at supper....(I was thinking to myself.) I said I still wasn't

getting it, and he sort of laughed and repeated himself again. I'm trying SO

hard to figure out his message and am even soul searching about whether or not I

had shown him the extra buttons in my new car that let me talk on the phone

without touching my phone...my brain was really straining here! So one last

time, I Ieaned in and apologized for not hearing him, and I repeated what I

thought he had said. He started laughing a little harder and shook his head

no...nearly laughing to tears, and started making a strumming gesture with his

hands while he repeated " Have you played in your car lately? " I paused for a

moment...this was really weird....

And then the lightbulb went off. " OH!!! " I said! " Have you played your GUITAR

lately!!! " I had to laugh, and he was in tears at this point he was laughing so

hard...so then of course I had to yell to Mom and what I thought Dad had

said and what he really said...which brought Dad to tears of laughter all over

again!

Love your story Lori, especially that your dad had such a good laugh out of it

all as well.

It's so important to find levity where we can J

My mil is a very proper little 94 yr old Japanese lady. She has a giant

hiatle hernia that causes her to belch - and blech like she just drank a

pint in 10 seconds! After every little meal there it is, a few little

froggy burps, then a big ripping belch, often followed by a few more. She

looked shocked then laughs. and that's a relief so we laugh together.

Sometimes as we're laughing she says who did that, was that me? I think

that was me! " And she laughs more. How odd she exclaims. To her this is

all caused by " that darned hernia " and Parkinson's (which causes most

everything). The really funny thing is our dog who is always by her side

can't take it and runs away frightened. I'm so glad when she wonders who

made the noise and she laughs when it happens. And we all get a laugh about

the dog running for cover !

My mil also has a terrible time sleeping and as her primary care doctor

said, people with brain damage have a hard time getting and staying asleep. "

That really struck me because I used to volunteer for a traumatic brain

injury network here and it is very true! Funny I hadn't thought of her as

brain damaged before but of course she is! Anyway when the lights go out

she will sometimes yell for an hour before she can wind down, " help me I'm

itchy my stomach hurts my leg hurts I can't sleep I want to sleep my stomach

hurts I have get up somebody help me pleeeease.. " One of us goes in to try

and help her quiet - close your eyes, don't make noise. Keep eyes closed.

If she can keep her eyes closed long enough she goes right to sleep. When I

go in I say her name and what's going on with all this noise? She says I

need some help, need someone to help me. A few more times with that

question and answer then she looks up and gives me this big beautiful grin

and says, " You look so pretty! " My heart melts. I have to tell her she'll

get no were with bribes and she laughs like a child. I'm never sure if

she's really as happy as her beaming smiling face would have me think, but I

really like to think she is and it makes it all worth while.
