Hi, . Though it is expensive, we started taking Mom for a pedicure

each month. She loves the pampering.

My mom has been at a care home for about a year. Every so often the place has a

podiatrist come in and do everyones toenails. It is covered by medicare. I was

very relieved about this because when she was living at my house it was a

serious issue. If I could get her to deal with it at all she would use a pair of

very dull little kid scissors to do the job. Disaster! Now at her care home they

cannot get her to deal with her fingernails so I have to take her for a manicure

every so often. She protests and I am always afraid she will make a scene at the

nail salon but so far she has been able to keep her temper down.So it might be

worth checking with a foot Dr to eliminate the toe problem.

Hi ,

In my nursing days eons ago we were not allowed to cut toenails of seniors

because of problems with infection, circulation etc. Thankfully my mom started

going to a foot care nurse who visited her seniors apt complex once a month,

very early in her dementia. We continued with that as long as Mom was living in

her own apt. Then once admitted to a nh I had a former nurse/massage therapist

visit her once a month to give hand and foot massage, cut her toenails and give

a manicure. Once Mom's hands curled into fists, the therapist was able to get

them relaxed and open for a short while on each visit. I don't think Mom ever

fought the nail care as it was given within her private space, quietly and one

on one.

mother has dementia. She tries to cut her own toenails. She can't see that well

so she usually stabs her toe with the metal nail file and makes it bleed. I take

her to the foot doctor every few months but she can't wait. She tells me I have

been cutting my toe nails all my life. I don't want to treat her like a baby but

I can't keep having her do this to herself. Should I take away the nail clipping

stuff? She is going to go wild so I am really not keen on doing that. Please

give me your advice.
