DEA Regulations

While accepting the existing regulations for controlled substances that are

the law, I am forced to ask some questions about them.

Why are double locks required for controlled substances? Where did the

rationale for this reg come from? Given that the DEA enforces the law, who

provided the input for the regulations that prohibit paramedics from carrying

controlled substances on their persons, and what gives the DEA any sort of

enhanced knowledge or expertise about their deployment which would give them

a rationale for enforcing this rule? Does anybody know the legislative

history of this rule?

Given that Congress, in its infinite wisdom (or stupidity) has enacted these

restrictions, do they make any sense? What public purpose is sustained by

making Schedule II substances have to be under double lock and key on

ambulances? And by what rationale is nalbuphine (Nubain) not a controlled

substance, while MS is? And which is the better drug?

Would the walls of the kingdom come tumbling down if, god forbid, we were

able to carry MS on our persons and dispense it to those who needed it? Do

we ever carry enough to get a hype off? Of course not. So what's behind the

restrictions?

Will any of the medical directors on here respond to: Why isn't MS carried

on all MICUs? What is the downside to carrying it, and how can one defend

not carrying it for patients who need it?

Why have we allowed bureaucrats and LE people to dictate what kind of medical

care we give? Why have the physicians abdicated their rights and privileges

to non-medical people like the DEA, Customs, FBI, local cops, and others who

would try to determine what kind of medical treatments should be given by

those whose expertise is much greater than theirs?

Why are we so afraid of providing adequate pain management for folks like

terminal cancer patients in this country? Why do doctors tell the families

of terminal patients that they won't give them MS because they might become

addicted, never mind that they'll be dead in a week? Why is heroin so widely

used lawfully in Europe but not here?

Why are we so stupid?

Best,
