Guest guest
Hello, If someone here can help me to arrange for Brain Donation/autopsy for LBD/dementia research in advance I would appreciate the info on how to set it up. My husband Bob is still in fair health, but I would like to get this set up for the future. Pat M. Guest guest
You are wise to look into this now, why your husband Bob is doing well. Waiting until the family member is on his/her death bed is a very stressful time to be making such arrangements. If you are interested in donating your husband's brain to the Mayo Clinic, I can assist you in making those arrangements. I have volunteered my time to help over 100 families successfully donate a loved one's brain. The cost for the brain donation is born by the family while the cost of the tissue analysis is born by Mayo. The costs average $750; the range is nothing to $1500. It's very important that such precious tissue be donated to a good brain bank. What's a good brain bank? One that is PUBLISHING research on DLB/PDD. You can see any organization's publications by doing a PubMed search (pubmed.gov - search using the terms " Dementia with Lewy Bodies " and " Mayo " to search for Mayo publications). Earlier this year Mayo received a $1 million grant for its brain bank and other researchers to study LBD. This 7-minute Mayo Jax video talks about brain donation: The neuropathologist at Mayo Jax, Dennis Dickson, MD, is one of the top in the world. You can email me privately. I'd like to know what city you live in and whether you've selected a funeral home. Finding a cooperative funeral home is key.
