Guest guest
le- You asked about any other problems related to smell.....just inconveniences I guess. For example, my husband and I were out one evening and asked that " make dinner " for our 12 year old. He successfully made grilled cheese sandwiches for the two of them. Unfortunately, he forgot to turn off the stove....the griddle began to smoke which set off the smoke alarm....Neither of which he was aware of. Fortunately, Lizzie(our 12 year old) was there to smell and hear the smoke/alarm and they both rescued the griddle before damage was done. He misses out on the smell of flowers and freshly baked cookies, but also misses the smell of a dirty diaper...so there are trade-offs. Since he has never smelled, he doesn't miss it. The same is true for his hearing. He has never heard so doesn't know what he is missing......and really doesn't care. He is proud of his deafness but to a point. His most favorite activity is being with extended family who are very good with him. He does wish he could hear in those situations because he could communicate more fluently. Right now, it is broken sign language and note writing. Sally (, 18)
