Guest guest
Dawn This is how I think: Paralysis can happen if your chiari is progressive, but that is true for a very small percentage of chiarians. Believe me, you will know when your chiari becomes progressive. You will experience an increase in symptoms, like swallowing problems, vision problems, possible sleep apnea, develop a syrinx, pain and weakness in your limbs and more. It must go a very long way before you get paralised. I honestly do not think you should worry about that. The surgery is a very big intervention and has it's own complications, so you do not want it if you can control your symptoms with meds. I do think your chiari should be checked regularly, though. If you get more symptoms or a syrinx you should consider surgery. My daughter and I both have chiari. My herniation was 14mm. My symptoms were very progressive after I fell on my head. I had no choice but to get surgery. My daughter's herniation is borderline. She suffers severe migraines. She often ended up in the ER. Now she is on meds to prevent the headaches. She sometimes still suffer, but it is mostly under control. We decided against surgery at this time, but if she develops other problems we will definitely go for the surgery. After my surgery she strongly decided against it. She saw what I went through and it scared her off. I recommend you read up about chiari so you will know all the symptoms and complications. Knowledge is your best weapon to make an informed decision about surgery. It is not an easy decision, I know. Whatever you decide, you are still going to wonder about the other choice you had. I hope thi9s helps you a little.
