Guest guest
Dear Dorothy, Sorry that I can't help you with this. All I can offer is support and will send up prayers for you and your family. Sending you prayers and good thoughts from NY, Helene > > > My mil is in the process of dying now. The rn manager thinks morphine and Ativan is enough. It's 4 am and she has been screaming at the top of her lungs where's my daddy, someone help me I can't walk I can't move I can't do anything I'm no good - and on and on. I have been here on the sofa feeling helpless. I asked the rn to check with her doctor as he had some suggestions of what we might try in place of holdol and she finally did but tells me seroquel isn't covered by hospice and the last time she tried it it wasn't so good. Is there anything I might suggest trying? I don't care if we have to pay for it but I do care that she is not suffering like this > > Last night the morphine worked almost all night, tonight it worked just 4 hours. > I am also concerned with this trend the morphine could turn on her and may be causing agitation > > Appreciate suggestions. It looks like we continue to have to be proactive in her care and be the ones administering these drugs which I really hate ESP in the middle of the night when so tired > > - Dorothy > from cell phone >
Guest guest
I would suggest increasing the dose of seroquel, contact the neuro or the primary care physician and you will have to pay for it out of your pocket. The hospice may want to use thorazine or more morphine. Thorazine is not good for LBD. The morphine at an increase dose may work to sedate her, but will also increase the likelihood of immenent death as it suppresses the breathing. Praying for you and yours, Pat M. > ** > > > Dear Dorothy, > Sorry that I can't help you with this. Guest guest
My mom was on seraquel low dose for 2 days and the neurologist dc it. He said that it was not working Those 2 nights she slept well and didn't fight her demons in her dreams I contacted a research doctor at IU and asked for a second opinion and he said that he would reccomend namenda. He said that he felt that her tx was well planned up to being put in hospice. Now I found out that he went to school with mom's neurologist. So now I don't believe either because of the " good old boy " relationship ________________________________ To: LBDcaregivers Sent: Friday, December 23, 2011 9:44 AM Subject: Re: Re: Holdol substitute ? Guest guest
Clozaril (clozapine) may be less expensive than Seroquel so perhaps it will be covered. It's an atypical antipsychotic. I think I'd ask about other medications first -- Depakote, for example. She could be experiencing terminal agitation and nothing will help. > > > My mil is in the process of dying now. Guest guest
Dorothy, I am so sorry you and your mil are going through this end of life pain. Personally rather than add more meds I would remove the ativan and see if she rests easier with just the morphine. I hope she can find peace soon. > > > My mil is in the process of dying now.
