Guest guest
Condolences to you and yours.  It was so good that it was peaceful. And good her family got to be with her. Donna R My mother in law is at peace  passed very peacefully tonight about 10:30pm. Her daughter and son in law managed to get a flight and drive up here and had almost 5 hour sitting with her this afternoon. She was in a coma, strong rhythmic breathing with the rattles despite atropine but we got past that being unsettling. I am certain she knew they were here. My husband, one of her caregivers, assorted dogs were all sitting with her; flameless candles lighting the room softly, many beautiful Christmas lights and Christmas carols CDs playing softly. When Jewels Christmas cd played it sounded like angels and mom relaxed even more. I was getting my infusion most of the evening and just as it was finished she passed. It was quick, it was peaceful and beautiful and we are so grateful for the help received here and from her caregivers and from hospice etc. - Dorothy from cell phone

Guest guest
Dorothy I send my condolences and am so relieved to read how peaceful your mother in law's passing was, including time with her daughter and son in law. You must be exhausted after the agitation she experienced for so long. I hope you can sleep deeply and recover now. That may take some time to come back but I so hope it does for you. Guest guest
We are glad you found us for this difficult journey you folks faced. May all of you be grateful for the time she had here with you and also for the end of the Lewy Body roller coaster for her and for you. Time will change the way you remember her. The pain and torture of this disease will fade and pleasant memories of her prior life will be restored to all of you. God Bless you all in the days ahead. Leona Leona: Caregiver for husband Ray, age 68, diagnosed 2/04 with Parkinson's Disease. Changed doctors, diagnosed 6/06 with LBD. Almost continual downhill slide no matter what drugs we try. 5/2/08 Ray was placed in Sunrise Nursing Home in Oswego, NY, 1 hour from home. So far, so good! Hardest thing I have ever done in my life, however. 3/19/09 transferred to Samaritan Keep NH in Watertown, NY closer to home. He passed peacefully at 5:18 am on April 14, 2009. I am handling it OK. Guest guest
Hi Cassie I send my condolences on the loss of your husband. I think losing a spouse is much more difficult than losing a parent. We are glad my mil is not suffering any more and she really did suffer. We did our absolute best to keep her as healthy and happy as possible and even to the end she smiled. It took a huge toll on my husband and I financially, emotionally and physically. When caring for someone with this disease you ride the lewy roller coaster along with the loved one and it's tough on everyone. Guest guest
Dorothy, If I didn't say so before, my condolences on your mother-in-law's passing. I think we all hope to close our lives, and especially those of our loved ones, so well. Judy, When the article is published, would you let all of us know where to view it? I have noticed that there are some significant differences and, in circumstances like mine (Mom and I lived together for about 25 years before caregiving became an issue), some similarities to both relationships. There is a great deal of research in caregiving taking place here at the University of Minnesota, too. Are you familiar with Joe Gaugler, PhD? He's with the School of Public Health in our Academic Health Center. He conducts regular, free, conferences (1-day) for caregivers, both family and professional. (Small fee for CEUs.) We have wonderful exchanges taking place at those events. I am also taking part in a study by Mark Reese, under Dr. Gaugler, investigating the benefit of specific counseling for caregivers. There is definitely a benefit! The more we know about the caregiving relationship and how we all cope, the better we are able to handle our own situations. Thanks, Judy, for the work you do.
