In 11 yrs of working with autistic children and giving

them all selenium at least 200mcg daily I have never

had a rest taken from it or a high selenium blood

level. You need to ask your doctor why he/she wants

to give a " rest " from selenium (or zinc or magnesium)

ever unless blood rates are too high. Dr. JM

I've read that 100- 300 mg of zinc can be toxic, but that's quite a bit.

I give my daughter Body Bio Liquid Selenium (sodium selenate). One dose is 200

mcg in 3 drops. One dose was not working for us as the blood levels were not

increasing, only until we quadrupled the dose (so that would be 800 mcg) did we

see an increase in her blood levels and she finally made it to the normal range.

Should we stop giving her that high a dose?

If anyone knows please respond because now I am concerned....

I found this: Human toxicity has not been

conclusively determined but is considered to occur as

a result of high industrial exposure. The salt form of

selenium (sodium selenite) is toxic at relatively low

levels, while the amino acid form (selenomethionine or

selenocysteine) may be safely ingested at levels up to

1,000 mcg for an adult. There have been cases of

vitamin companies putting large doses of the salt form

of selenium into their product causing grave health

problems among those who have taken the product.

Reported symptoms of toxicity include hair loss,

depigmentation of skin, abnormal nails, and weariness.

A garlic odor on the breath, without garlic ingestion,

may be an indication of selenium toxicity.

If you are going to give such high doses, maybe you

should not use the sodium selenite form per this info.

I generally use Thorne's selenium picolinate. Dr. JM

I think the concern about using selenium while chelating comes from a

recommendation by Dr Boyd Haley a few years ago. He stated that selenium

binds naturally to mercury and other heavy metals to make it easier for the

body to excrete. (Selenium is supposedly the reason that high-mercury fish

don't get " autism " ; they also have high levels of selenium.) He suggested

that selenium should NOT be used while chelating because it would prevent

the chelator from working properly.

There was a major discussion about this on the CK2 list some time ago. I

don't know if the recommendation has changed.
