CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

So you went alone? I saw that one alone last Sunday. Heaven.

My mini-review:short on story (too many confrontations with those damn Orcs),

loooong on visually stunning cinematography! (Marc and I choose carefully which

movies we spend money on to see in the theatre; generally we reserve our scant

resources (doubly so, since we both have to go alone)) for those with visuals

that will not translate onto a TV screen. LOTR DEFINITELY fell into that

category! A feast for the eyes. :-)

I wish he hadn't expanded Arwen's part. I don't mind cuts (it would be

insanely long without them) but I do mind serious changes. I read it for

the first time 33 years ago and I have become inflexible, he, he.

Wow!!!! The MOST impressive part of this was there was no... " but Putter

kept running up and down the aisles " or " Enrique felt a spider under the

chair " ...etc. etc.

Good for you guys Salli!!!!!

P.S - If you ever get to Disneyland, DO NOT take Enrique to go see " Honey, I

shrunk the kids " .

HOW DO YOU GUYS DO THAT?

I cannot watch a movie by myself.

I will start hearing EVERYONE behind me, wondering why that girl is here

alone.. maybe she got stood up... you think she has no friends? Why is she

here by herself? whisper whisper whisper.......

And I'll hear all that even if not one single person in the whole theatre

should notice me.

People go to the movies alone a lot these days. not that I get out much but

there is at least one person in the theater who is there alone. I have a friend

who goes to the movies by herself quite a bit.

Grace, I used to feel that way too. And if I saw a person alone in the line up,

I'd feel so bad for them... But when Marc was on the boats, he went to movies

alone all the time when they were in ports. I KNEW he wasn't a loser, I KNEW

somebody loved him...so I stopped feeling sorry for people who were alone in

movies. THEN, when was about 6 months old, a friend offered to babysit for

an afternoon and I didn't know what to do with myself! There was something I

wanted to see at the matinee, so I decided just to take the plunge. IT WAS

WONDERFUL. Nobody talking to me, nobody hogging the armrest... and it's

especially nice that if you hate the movie, you can just get up and leave.

Watching " Invaders From Mars " , I went to the bathroom halfway through, realized

I didn't care how it ended, and went shopping!

The only time I ever felt uncomfortable was when I went to see 'There's

Something About ' in my hometown -- and an old boyfriend was there with his

wife.

The key is just to sit there and KNOW you're not a loser. At Lord of the Rings,

there were two couples sitting beside me, and one empty seat. The guy on the

other side of it asked me if I minded him putting coats there, and I said, " NO!

Not at all! I'm on a break from husband and kid, and blissfully ALONE! " That's

the ticket. :-)

Wow Salli - THAT IS GREAT!!! I'm so glad you got out for awhile!

Kerri

Salli Goes to a MOVIE!

I saw Lord of the Rings! I really did! I haven't been to a movie since May

of 2000 when I saw Dinosaur but I didn't see much of it because I saw it with

ALL FIVE of my kids.

Lou took Robbie for a couple of hours and picked up Putter from school and

took him to OT.

Matt cried for half the movie *anticipating* that scene. At " My King " he

out and out sobbed.

The lady next to us looked very nervous...

Grace, I think that is called " being neurotic. "

When are you going to the dr about some prozac, girl? ;)

I lost it at, " I would have followed you. " Waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I did in the book, I found him to be the most interesting, conflicted,

touching character in the whole story.

Sorry. But I didn't know we were giving it away -- we haven't put the scene in

context... But, if you figured it all out, I DO apologize. :-(

The woman next to you was a FOOL! (Putter taught me that word) She should

not go to long-awaited movies made from books that people have strong

feelings about unless she is prepared for some kind of reaction.

I did not cry. I rarely cry at movies. I sat and smiled through all the

battle scenes with orcs because it was just all so beautiful. Odd reaction

perhaps but I was already so fond of all the characters before I ever got to

the movie that I simply enjoyed watching them.

I never wondered how they would do dwarves as that seems easy but I have

always wondered how they would do hobbits and elves. Good job as it turns

out at least in my opinion though I read the New York Times review and they

said all the different kinds of people were basically done with hairstyles

and, hmm, kinda true? Also said that Frodo looks naturally like what

has been trying to achieve through surgery. Also, kinda

true.

I was very sorry to come back to my life which, while it may have its heroic

aspects, does seem a bit mundane after THAT movie.

Well, I preferred Aragorn and Faramir (who naturally does not appear in THIS

movie) in the book; I am the boring kind of person who prefers in

Gone With the Wind to Scarlett. Interestingly enough, Enrique could not

tell the difference, at least not easily, between Aragorn and Boromir and I

thought it was a very clear difference and important to their characters. An

AS thing? I don't really know.

Kerri:

Read the book before you see the movie. The movie goes along very rapidly

and I wonder if it mightn't be easy to miss some things? I felt as if I was

using my very recent re-reading of the book a great deal, (poking Enrique,

who read it for the third time last month, and saying, " But in the book,

such and such happened...? "

Isn't Jacquie nice! I just realized how unsympathetic my response might

have sounded. I hope it didn't! I just really think it is probably better

to read the book first. Or if Kerri read it sixteen years ago, to re-read

it.

Oh, Penny, I was reading good literature at thirteen and my teenaged years

were SO misspent.

I was a very bad girl.

Same here. I read literature; I read the assigned english books the summers

BEFORE class...and yet, although it was my brother who to court on drug charges,

my parents and I all admit that *I* was far worse than he. (if you ever want

the detailed account of how many times I ruined my life, let me know.)

Book-learning and life-smarts do NOT necessarily go hand-in-hand.
