Guest guest
The Hoffman sign is when one flicks the nail on a person with " upper motor neuron disease " there is a flexure or inward movement of one's thumb.I do not know who Hoffman was, but I suspect he was a neurologist. The sign means thre same as the " Babinski " means in the lower extremity, that this indicates " upper motor neuron disaease " or a lack of reflex motor control. If one has lower moton neuron disease this reflex will be lost. These abnormal signs require an intact lower neuron system. I do know that Babinski was a neurologist. It is quite characteristic of a person with PLS and it does occur early in ALS before there is lower motor damage. You can't elicit these findings or yourself, just as you cannot tickel yourself. Dr. Bill --- End forwarded message ---
