Guest guest
It IS possible to have iron overload at the same time as low ferritin. Also look at hematocrit and hemoglobin as well as transferrin saturation and serum iron. Transferrin saturation is calculated from the TIBC and serum iron (hope that's right) it is a calculated value, not a test itself. Some iron overload sites also use the UIBC value as diagnostic. After reading off and on for a year, and very concentated reading since I got my last panel done in Sept, with my ferritin steadily rising, and hematocrit and hemoglobin also steadily rising, I decided to start treating though my Tsat and UIBC are still within normal range. My family history on both sides of diseases that can be caused or exacerbated by high iron is extensive, and I didn't want to wait for my ferritin to keep on rising and rising. FWIW, I just read that hyperthyroid is associated with high ferritin. And I was hyper for about 4 months in the year my ferritin level had the biggest increase. Hypo T is usually associated with low ferritin. But there are probably exceptions to both, as iron is very complicated. sol Robin Hill-Young wrote: > Why do you give treatment when ferritin is super low or high. do you > mean in one case it's anemia and in the other it's HH? > > Is it normal to react badly to high iron foods? > > In your case what came first hypoT or HH. > > Right now it almost seems like I'm bouncing back an forth between > anemia and high iron. Guest guest
Here is the link for high ferritin/hyperthyroid http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8136612?dopt=Abstract I'm brain dead tonight, what is HB? And I'm guessing you mean a wbc can indicate infection or ? One thing I can't really find much on is RDW, I mean I 've found plenty discussing what it means, but haven't found anything about high RDW co-existing with high ferritin? As my ferritin increased so has the RDW, red blood cell count, and hematocrit. In my mind, I associate high RDW-low B12 with low ferritin, not with high, and I'd like to know more about whether there is a connection, what the connection is, and if it is unusual to have high RDW with high ferritin. sol catliciousoz wrote: > yes very important to do CBC but in lieu of that a wbc can tell you if > there is reason for ferritin spike as it were, but also HB can be > diagnostic, my Tsat% and HB were over range for several years before I > found a new doc who tested me for genes for HH, ferritin would have > looked great for an anemic person supplementing, but for someone who > loads, way too high. > high iron can also cause hypoT and hypoPit due to loading in the pit > and thyroid gland, I've not heard of the hyper / high iron connection > before, thanks for bringing it up, most people on the groups I'm on > with HH end up with adrenal fatigue and hypoT... but as we know, there > are always more than one side to these stories! :-) > >
Guest guest
So far so good, I just had my second donation on Thursday. sol catliciousoz wrote: > Good call! :-) > > but I meant more like, if one has an unusual ferritin result, wait a > couple of weeks / months and retest just to rule out the acute phase > reaction, sorry if I didn't put that right, in your case, your results > all back the others up, no need to recheck as it were, all saying, get > rid of some iron! how is it going? > > >
