Clostridia sp. 68.5

Anyone effectively dealt with Clostridia? My DAN! said my son's level is

the highest he's ever seen! Metametrix GIfx reference range 0-6.2 his level

was 68.5!

We tried Flagyl (which my other son takes well) but it made him throw up.

I'm tempted to try it again to confirm the nausea wasn't a coincidence

since brother does so well on it. The other antibiotic both DAN! and GI doc

wanted to try is Vancomycin but I'm reluctant to try that as there are so

few antibiotics available to us with the GFCFSF restrictions and he's had

an anaphylactic reaction to sulfa drugs in the past and

I'm anaphylactic to erythromycin so there are 2 big strains of antibiotics I

don't want to touch regardless of GFCF issues.

The naturals he suggested are HBOT (which I'm dying to try but have neither

the time nor the money right now), S. boulardii (which we did in the past

with no effect that I could see), Oxydrene or Oxypowder (which he said are

essentially the same thing I think), and Aetyl L Carnitine which I bought

Jarrow brand at Whole Foods today.

SO, which of these are worth the time/effort? Should I go for the big guns

because the level is so high?

Thanks,

We have used Oxypowder for a few years to relieve constipation. I am not

aware of it doing anything for Clostridia.

The 2 big guns for Clostridia are Flagyl and Vanco. The levels you mention

are very high. It is possible that your son threw up due to a die off from

the Flagyl and maybe not due to an allergic reaction. Did he develop any

signs of an allergic type reaction like rash, hives, etc.? If not, you may

want to talk to your doc about another try of Flagyl or even Vanco. With the

very high levels you are seeing, I would think you would need one of the big

guns the docs mentioned. I can tell you from experience with our boys that

when Clostridia gets out of control, then their related symptoms skyrocket

and the only meds that help at that point are either Flagyl or Vanco.

I should also say that we always saw high levels of Clostridia until we

started HBOT a few years ago and have not seen it above the ref range ever

since. Clostridia does not like oxygen so it makes sense that HBOT would

nail it. Of course HBOT can stir yeast, so it is good to have an antifungal

in progress when doing it.

Hope this helps, L
