Guest guest
I just saw a blood doctor because I wanted to get a prescription for blood draws to treat my high ferritin (tested at 414 in April 2008, up from 292 tested April 2007). He said that a high ferritin level by itself doesn't mean that anything's wrong. He said there are 2 conditions, hemachromatosis and hemastomosis, that can cause high ferritin, but hemastomosis isn't harmful. OK, fine... Maybe that's true. But then we started talking about my adrenals and thyroid, and he totally ripped into me, saying that low cortisol doesn't automatically mean that your adrenals are weak. I told him that it makes sense because I had low cortisol symptoms when I was younger (allergies, asthma, and dry skin). He wants me to stop Isocort and get a ACTH stim test and a pituitary MRI! Even though when I tried reducing my Isocort dose a few months ago everything went to hell! He also said that my thyroid is normal. These were my tests in April when I wasn't taking any thyroid meds. TSH 0.588 (.350-5.5) Free T4 1.50 (.61-1.76) Free T3 3.5 (2.3-4.2) How could my thyroid be normal when my temps were horrible before starting T3 and I had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism??? I'm finally starting to feel better as I'm ramping up TiTre. He also said that T4 is MORE IMPORTANT than T3??? What??? If he were to treat me, he wants me to stop TiTre and Isocort and get a whole bunch of crazy tests, like an ultrasound of my abdomen and a I-131 thyroid uptake (some sort of radioactive test???) Sorry to vent, but this just really sucks. It seems like every new doctor I see goes totally against everything I've learned. After staring TiTre, my temps are almost at 98.6 and I'm finally having hope that I will feel normal soon. So it seems like I'm on the right track. But he also said, " Just because a med makes you feel better, doesn't mean it's good for you. " Maybe I can see the validity in that. I don't know, I just feel really discouraged right now. Does anybody know anything about what this doctor is talking about? -Jung
