Roman numerals are used for cardiology classes or any other type of classes, cranial nerves, EKG leads (except V1 V2), levels, and stages. Also, there some discussion as to diabetes mellitus Type I/II or Type 1/2. In BOS it says Type I or Type II, and since that's what my job goes by is what's in BOS that's how I do it. Everything else is arabic, except BOS says spell out numbers under 10 or in the case of medication dosages where two numbers are next to each other, for example: The patient takes enteric-coated aspirin 325 mg two tablets per day. I've seen some discussion on that one as well, but that's what my employer wants so that's what they get Hope this helps Jan " Typing is my life "

Guest guest
Thanks Jan for the help. Will make a note of it. I do know that diabetes mellitus has been written as arabic for a long time, per Vera Pyle, but if your boss wants you to follow BOS, I guess you have to do that. I also agree on the 325 two qd. I do have one thing to add to that though and that would be with things like insulin 70/30, instead of spelling out the units, I use commas to separate the numbers. So I would put insulin 70/30, 30 units. I just think this looks better than insulin 70/30, thirty units, and seems to me to be easier to read. I do understand having to do what the boss wants though. We are getting a new boss next week. Can't wait to see what kind of changes she may decide to make. Guest guest
Thanks Jan...I will pass this on to my mentorees who do not yet own the BOS. Just a note on that " under ten " business. The last AAMT BOS workshop ( Tessier) that I attended, they changed their preference to use arabic numbers written out at all times for clarity purposes...that is...i.e., The patient must take 2 tablets a day vs two tablets a day. OR The patient is to return in 2 days vs two days. I have been putting this style to practice since that workshop and it has saved me a lot of time from stopping and thinking of the style rule. I think it makes sense, I just wish that they would publish a new BOS with some of these upgrades to their standards of style. Thanks again... Guest guest
So, we all patiently await the new publication, which according to Holly I think it was, won't be for another year. I would think this is the greatest service that AAMT could do for their members...I am sure it is a huge undertaking, but.... I know they publish some of their changes in the JAAMT, but quite honestly, I do not have time to always read that one from cover to cover...let alone copy those needed changes into my oldy, moldy BOS... What's a MT to do.... Have a great day...Snow in Chicago Cheryl, CMT

Since I don't belong to AAMT, it wouldn't do me much good if they only published updates in JAAMT since I don't get that magazine. They absolutely need to update BOS and make it available to all MTs, not just members. JMO Jan " Typing is my life "
Guest guest
ABSOLUTELY....In the meantime, if anything interesting comes across my desk and I have time to read it, I will pass it on...I have been a longstanding member with the AAMT and I have some issues also. Sometime maybe we can swap stories...privately maybe. I do not have a desire to start off a AAMT flaming session; however, on the other hand, maybe the new MTs need to see and hear both sides of the issue. I am a firm believer in to each their own. Just because I don't care to join AAMT doesn't mean I think no one should. I'd be happy to discuss it with you privately, and I'd appreciate whatever info you care to share that comes across your desk. Guest guest
I believe it was the American Diabetes Association that changed the diabetes grades from Roman to Arabic. The AAMT journal did an article on it some time back, noting the change, but apparently the BOS hasn't been updated since then. You may want to query the AAMT site and then present their answer to your boss, Jan. Sara Margaret Grant wrote: > Thanks Jan for the help. Will make a note of it.
