Guest guest
Can PSA go down? Depends. It can go up because of gland enlargement. It can go up because of prostatitis inflammation. And in those cases, it can also go down. You report biopsied prostate cancer, but even then, if that cancer in your Gleason Score 6 is minimal, strict diet and supplements could rein in PSA rise and even result in slight decrese. And, certainly, with androgen deprivation the PSA would go down. It would be interesting to know how many core samples were extracted in biopsy and of that number how many were found cancerous and of those cancerous, what percentage of cancer was determined on each such sample. You've opted for active surveillnce which is reasonable with only a couple core samples evidencing PC and if those percentages were low, as long as close monitoring is maintained by you and your physicin. Somewhat curious as to what prompted the question regarding PSA? > > > I was diagnosed with Pca in August,2007. > > My numbers are: > > Age-60 > PSA 3.17 (Had doubled in 18 months) > Stage T1c > Gleason 6 (3+3) > Bone Scan & CAT Scan-Negative > Active Surveillance > > I will be getting another PSA next week. Guest guest
Hi Sy, My uro says that it can go down. He says that it changes day to day. He also suggested that you not ejaculate for 48 hours before a PSA. When we got down to the point where my PSA started going up fast he did free and total PSA's. He was looking for 20% or greater PSA that was free(not attached to protein)mine was 8%. What was more concerning to my uro was the velocity, which is the amount it goes up over time. His line in the sand was 10% per year. Mine went from 4.0 to 5.2 in six months. Good luck! Rick Can PSA go down? Guest guest
The PSA reading may be increased by activities such as riding a bicycle, having sex, and the probing finger of the doctor doing a DRE! Many doctors are unaware of this. Therefore, in your own interest, abstain from sex, weight lifting, and bicycling type activities (anything that exercises or presses upward toward the prostate) for at least one week before your blood test, and make sure that your blood is drawn BEFORE the doctor does the DRE. This will increase the accuracy of the PSA analysis in so far as external stimulation is concerned. An infection can also cause a variation. There will always be small variations, because lab results are inexact. Terry's article is excellent.
