Guest guest
That should have been, great ;-( not. Is there a good place to find out what this means? The ironoverload book and website arent' really that informative. Guest guest
http://www.ironoverload.org I am puzzled by the low iron and low transferrin ratio. Do not know what that means. But if you donated 2 weeks ago and ferritin is now 222 that isn't good. At more than one place I've read that if a person has genetic hemochromatosis when they donate a unit of blood ferritin goes down by 25 to 30 pts only. A person with idiopathic non-genetic iron overload can see their ferritin drop WAY more than that just from the first donation. But then with subsequent donations they lose less ferritin with each one. So it looks like at the very least your ferritin must have been 247 to 252 before the donation. If you are non-genetic iron overload it may have been significantly higher than that. Which doesn't seem remotely possible, unless you have inflammation artificially raising it now. I hope you will keep donating and keep testing and consider the " diet " recommendations here: http://www.ironoverload.org/Diet.html If you can find a good one it may be time to have a consult iwth a hematologist. Your confusing results really need ot be looked at by a real iron expert. I'm sure some hematologists are as useless as endos, but they can't all be. The American Hemochromatosis Society maintains a phyiscian referral list http://www.americanhs.org/doctors.htm sorry I don't have more, sol dorothyroeder wrote: > Great, in June my ferritin was 194 (11-307). > Now 2 wks after I donated blood once it was 222. > Transferrin 268 (188-341) > Iron 50 (35-175) > TIBC 330 (250-400) > ratio 15%. > > Dorothy > > >
Guest guest
Thanks, Lee. My hemoglobin did go down from 14.2 to 13.5. But then the finger stick a week later when I did my second donation was 14.3. Dorothy > My understanding is it is quite common for Feritin to initally increase > when Phlebs are started.
