Waye, MD (Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York City) presented a videotaped demonstration of gastric and small-bowel enteroscopy using a specialty push enteroscope. He advocates the use of this method for patients with small bowel diseases, malabsorption, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, or abnormalities observed but not identified by radiology. The specialty push endoscope consists of a controllable 225-centimeter fiberoptic probe and videoscope, an optional overtube, and an operative channel through which the operator can take biopsy specimens or cauterize bleeding sites by heater-probe ablation. It is capable of reaching to the distal ileum. Dr. Waye prefers not to use the overtube because its tendency to lodge in the duodenum may limit the scope's ability to see the entire upper GI tract by as much as 20 to 40 centimeters. He acknowledged, however, that others prefer to use the overtube because, without it, the optical fiber tends to loop in the stomach and its highly flexible tip may be unable to pass through the pyloric sphincter. " And, in Stedman's GI & GU Words, they list push enteroscopy, so I would think push endoscope would be correct. Peggy

Here is the definition for push enteroscope per Vera: diagnostic instrument and treament procedure for jejunal angiodysplasias and small intestine bleeding sites and lesions. A child-size colonoscope is introduced via the mouth into the upper gastrointestinal tract and advanced to distances beyond the ligament of Treitz. Peggy >> I feel like a big dunce because I didn't think enteroscopy and endoscope were the same thing. This is the definitions Stedman's gives and they sound like they are 2 different things to me: enteroscope- A speculum for inspecting the inside of the intestine in operative cases. endoscope- An instrument for the examination of the interior of a canal or hollow viscus. Maybe not though.......... I probably quoted too much, and no one got that far in reading it. LOL Peggy
