Dear Kathyann,

Hi, and welcome to the group. There are a lot of very knowledgeable

parents with a lot of wonderful advice. I am very new to the group and don't

have as much experience as most of the other parents. My daughter is

3 1/2 and has a 45-50db low frequency loss. She is a late talker and so was

my husband. He has a low loss as well. ( he never told me about his hearing

loss I thought he was a selective listener, his father has been described as

the same)

I know how you feel. This is a difficult road for any parent to be on.

If you want to e-mail me privately to describe the behavior problems I will

be happy to listen and let you know how we dealt with 's behavior.

But I can tell you this, you probably have a normal 3 year old with a

communication problem which makes the terrible 3's twice as terrible. (by the

way, the terrible 2's don't stop at 2)

I have found that selective listening works very well for me. Especially

when I am talking to " experts " that have crystal balls to predict the future

of any child. , because of her hearing loss is an early reader. We

started teaching her the alphabet very early and the sounds that go with the

letters and now she can break down words and sound them out.

It's hard to do but take it one day at a time. They grow up really fast

with or without disabilities. Look for someone in your area that is a parent

of a success story child and ask for advice from them. I have found this to

work well for me. Hang in there.

Sheri,

I'm super new here, today's my first day posting, and was wondering if

the low frequency loss is the reason for talking late. Most of my daughter's

loss is low frequency as well and she talks but doesn't enunciate her words.

Does your daughter speak clearly? I've had people tell me that Lexi talks

like a deaf child ~ I'm not sure how to react to that one yet, maybe that's

just a signal that I should be looking into her hearing more.

So true. I've always said the terrible 2's were just pracice for when they

turned 3. ;-)

Kathyann,

Yes we had behavioral problems.. It is so hard when those little

children can not communicate and it gets very frustrating for them..

Think about it, if it was you and people did not understand you... It

does get frustrating and with little kids, how else can they express

themselves???? My daughter was a little hellian at times, but the

frustration was at the root of the problem... She is almost 6 yrs old

now but she was diagnosed at the age of 2 yrs old.... Believe me it

does get better.......But you have to get the language going, I hope you

have somebody to help you get started. I have also heard about children

not reading past the fourth grade level, I don't know how accurate this

is as of yet. I think we as parents need to continually encourage

reading and read to our children..Also there is some good computer

programs out there that help do just that..... I have some that I use

with my daughter and son who is 3 yrs old... Let me know if you want

some information about them.... Hang in there, we've all pretty much

been there and yes it is nice to know you are not alone........ Tahna

and Nellie

Hi Jen,

My name is Tahna and I have a little girl almost 6 yrs old who has a

profound hearing loss...She recently got a cochlear implant and is making

wonderful progress...

I too have a 4 year old son, who is hearing, just selective hearing ,I think...

Just kidding... My daughter had started talking and then had a horribly high

fever at

the age of 1 1/2... 105* after that by 6 mos, she had no speech or language...

Just screams and some babbling... But a lot of frustration until we figured out

what the

heck was going on......... Take care, Tahna and Nellie

For some reason, this name is very familiar to me (and not just because you

wrote to me to be approved). At any rate, Welcome to the list. Glad to see you

made it! I've also recently approved a number of new memebers and a big WELCOME

to them also.

At age 2.1, he finally set up an appointment for a hearing test. She received

this test at 2.4 and was diagnosed with her hearing loss. The doctor that

needed to prescribe the aides required 's medical records at the time of the

first visit. At that time is when we found out that she failed her 1st test

This must have been terribly frustrating for you. We too went through diagnosis

hell, but I didn't have that additional frustration you had.

This has been a real emotional roller coaster for my husband and I. My first

question, has anyone experience any behavior problems?

That's putting it mildly!

Also, did any one ever tell you that your child will not read past the fourth

or fifth grade level.

We were told the third grade level. He's way past that now (he's in the 6th

grade). This would depend quite a bit on the quality of services your child is

receiving.

Hugs,

Kay

Kathyann;

I am also new to this list. As a started to read your letter I have that

familiar feeling in my stomach. My daughter will be two in September. Kara

has a severe to profound loss in both ears. She was diagnosed in April when

she was 18 mo. At Christmas time, when she was 15 mo, my husband and I

started thinking something wasn't right. She wasn't talking and couldn't

follow directions. However, she did say " up " and seemed to use it

appropriately. ( I later read that since this is a low frequency word that

this utterance is common in hoh babies, which is why some parents get

confused.)

At her 15 mo check up we told the Dr that she wasn't talking. She told us

not to worry and it was normal for kids not to speak until age 2 or later.

Since she wasn't that delayed we didn't mind.

We have a live in Nanny, who is wonderful. After the 15 mo check up she

started to notice Kara wasn't hearing. In fact, she didn't notice when we

walked into the house at night from work or if we walked into the room and

she was playing. Although we are new parents we were alerted.

We took her back to the pediatrician at 18 mo and told her that we think she

doesn't hear well. The Dr said she has wax in her ears. She cleaned out

the wax and said wait a few days. We said we want a formal hearing test

now! We went that afternoon to Huntington Hearing where Kara was originally

diagnosed.

Of course, since then she has had may hearing tests.

Right now Kara goes to BOCES, a hearing impaired school, two days a week. A

teacher for the deaf comes to our house one day a week. A speech

pathologist comes two days a week and on the weekends I have a student in

speech pathology work with Kara one day.

In September, Kara will go to school three days a week for two hours and the

speech pathology at home will stay the same. Of course, we still want her

to be a regular kid, so she will go to play group at the library on Mondays,

Gymboree on Tuesday and church group on Fridays. I know it sounds like a

lot, but since she is little the time she stays at any one function is not

much more that 1 1/2 hours.

Since Kara has been amplified on May 26, she is doing well. She has a

vocabulary of about 25 words and is picking up a new word every day or so.

Today she said bear, as in teddy bear. Kara wears and FM trainer which she

will have until she is three and then we will get a BTE with an FM adaptor.

We live in Long Island New York. The state has supplied everything so far.

The only thing we pay for ourselves is the student who comes on the

weekends. She is a friend of the family and I pay her $20 for 45 minutes.

We have also been out of pocket for a few dr visits, but not in excess of

$500. The state will also pay for her first hearing aids. This is why we

are waiting another 6 mo for aids because we want the best technology.

Kara seems to be an otherwise normal happy two year old. Of course we have

the terrible two thing going on some times. I think that because she got

aided at 19 mo that she wasn't too frustrated and maybe we'll pass on some

behavior problems for now. Our goal is to have Kara in mainstream

kindergarden in our district.

Anything else?

Hello

Hello,

My name is Kathyann and my daughter, andria (3), a little less than a

year ago was diagnosed with a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. My

mother - in - law has a hearing loss, but the audiologist could not

determine if the loss was from birth. My mother - in - law said she always

had to ask, " What? " . So at the hospital when I had , they asked if

there was any family history of hearing loss and I explained to them about

my mother - in - law. At 11 days old had a hearing test. The

audiologist said they would send the results to her pediatrician. We never

heard from him (he is also a family member....) about the test so we ASSUMED

that she passed. (you know what they say about assuming...I feel so

guilty!!!) We saw at him at her regular check ups (6 weeks, 3 months

etc..). As she was getting older and was not saying a word not even mama or

dada, I would tell him that I read in my parenting books that a child at

this age should be saying this many words. He told me a few times to throw

those books away, because his daughter did not start talking until she was

almost three. She did startle or turn to some loud noises. So we took his

advise.

At age 2.1, he finally set up an appointment for a hearing test. She

received this test at 2.4 and was diagnosed with her hearing loss. The

doctor that needed to prescribe the aides required 's medical records at

the time of the first visit. At that time is when we found out that she

failed her 1st test. She received her aides at 2.6 and currently is

attending speech therapy twice a week. does have a severe speech

delay ( level @ 9 mos.), PT/OT delays and we are starting to experience

behavior problems. In the fall she will be attending a preschool for the

special needs child.

This has been a real emotional roller coaster for my husband and I. My

first question, has anyone experience any behavior problems? Also, did any

one ever tell you that your child will not read past the fourth or fifth

grade level.

I am sorry this is so long, but that is our history.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Kathyann and welcome to the list! Welcome to all the other new members

[sherry Zeilstra]

Brother does that sound familiar. I figured at 6 months of age my son

couldn't hear, but it took until he was 2.6 before he was tested. Same old

story, some kids just talk late, blah, blah, blah. I felt guilty to, but

decided I couldn't dwell on that what ifs, and at least do something now.

This has been a real emotional roller coaster for my husband and I. My

first question, has anyone experience any behavior problems? Also, did any

one ever tell you that your child will not read past the fourth or fifth

grade level.

[sherry Zeilstra]

It is hard. I know has days still, he's eight now, where I could

just " toss him out the window with the bath water " . I feel most of his

behavior problems are directly related to his hearing loss. He also has a

fluctuating progressive loss, so there are days when he has a hard time

understanding anything. This frustrates him and he begins to act out more.

As for the fifth grade level stuff, they can tell you that, but it doesn't

mean you have to listen. It doesn't have to be the norm, unless school

districts chose to accept it as such, and they better not try it with .

has anyone experience any behavior problems?

Yes, I have a 4-year-old daughter who has been a real challenge the past

year, but my understanding is that at least part of it is developmental.

It's not easy to know what is normal age-related stuff and what is related

to hearing loss; since my daughter only has a mild loss in the lower

frequencies, it's difficult to pin the problem there. So I've attacked the

behavior problems on their own; plenty of other mothers of daughters have

told me their experience is the same.

Hope that helps --

Stefanie

, welcome to the list! My son Ben is almost 1, and I have learned a

ton from this list -- nothing beats talking to people who have been down

the pathe you're headed! I'm learning as I go, but have found a great

resource here that makes the going a lot easier.

, welcome to the list; I have an 11-month old HoH son and a 4-year old

daughter with a mild loss in the lower frequencies; her speech is fairly

normal for her age, though her r's and sh's are not as clear as they could

be, so far it's developmental. Otherwise she is very understandable, has

excellent vocabulary, syntax and sentence structure. We would not have

known about her loss, except that we had her tested because of her

brother's loss.

You also mentioned that her tympanogram was flat, even though she has

tubes; I thought tubes would solve the fluid problem, but I'm not a doctor.

My son had tubes put in at 7 months, which seems to have solved the fluid

problem, but now I think I should keep checking it (his loss is bilateral

sensorineural; the fluid caused additional loss). I would definitely

pursue this if I were you; hearing is so very critical, and you should be

getting help now.

Good luck,

Stefanie

Stefanie,

Does your daughter wear hearing aids? Has she had to do speech therapy?

At this time, she does not wear aids, although her audiologist thinks they

would help her. She has not had any speech therapy because her speech is

actually quite clear, and the few issues she does have still could be

developmental (this from my son's speech therapist).

She actually seems to hear quite a bit, has an extensive vocabulary and

amazing language abilities. Only recently has she started to tell me " I

can't hear you, Mommy " when I'm speaking to her in a low voice, but at a

level where I should be heard; from what I hear, 4 years old is the time

that this kind of loss becomes more noticeable. I have hesitated to aid

her, since there's so much that she does hear; but I do wonder if her level

of frustration comes from concentrating so hard on trying to hear. At this

time, I am monitoring the situation.
