Guest guest
For those who've not seen me say this before, I'll add my weight issues to the convo... 100 pounds weight gain here, over 1 year span in 1998 (the year after I implanted). I did have 1 short lived period of weight loss from pure starvation and living through a summer without a/c, but it quickly came back on. I've been on the right dose of Synthroid since about 1999, and my weight has been steady. I don't gain or lose, though I do toss around about 10-15 pounds -which changes depending if I'm on certain meds or not. Dieting doesn't help, and I'm unable to exercise -so I don't know if that would or not, since I haven't given it a good try. I've tried here and there to get into an exercise regimen and it makes other symptoms worse, plus I just found out last week that it aggravates Pseudotumor Cerebri. (Which is why a couple workouts at Curves built so much pressure in my head a tooth abscessed in 1 day.) I have hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's Disease (autoimmune of the thyroid) that were diagnosed within 1 year after implanting. Anyone with weight gain that you feel is not from over eating or changes in habits should have their thyroid checked out. It took my docs a year to check mine, so all that time I was gaining weight and never knew what it was until I'd gained that much. Guest guest
I gained my weight after removal, but my chest was dumped full of silicone by my plastic surgeon and I almost died. I took Flexeril for fibromyalgia, and gained 20 pounds. I lost 10, but then my thyroid went and I gained 20 again. I tried and tried to lose this, finally lost about 10 of it, but then my thyroid was low again and I gained 20 again. I am now trying to lose it again, but the thyroid, for me, was the biggest challenge. Also that I was so toxic and so ill that I could not exercise for years. I do exercise now, and am very careful what I eat. But, I am also older than many of you (65) so my metabolism may also have slowed down. What the answer is, I do not know. Guest guest
Have you tried water aerobics? You can work out as gently as you want/need and the water will give you gentle resistance. Guest guest
I don't want to say I am glad other women who had implants face weight issues, but it is nice to know I am not alone. I too have Hashimoto's and was evidently untreated for who knows how long. My internist finally ordered the tests, when she said I had gained weight faster than anyone she had ever seen (gee thanks!) Lynda, I do recall your story - I just wasn't aware until recently that it was you (I was pretty foggy for some time). But I sure do remember it, and that is why I was determined to have my implants removed properly. Does anyone here take Armour? I took both Synthroid and Armour, and Armour seemed to work better for me. As far as the weight....the only thing that has worked for me at all for me is a very supervised medical diet. And a realization that I simply do not want to jeopardize my health any longer with this much weight. I am not exercizing a lot yet, because of fatigue and because of the stress. As I lose more weight, I hope to increase the exercise. > > >For those who've not seen me say this before, I'll add my weight > >issues to the > >convo... > >100 pounds weight gain here, over 1 year span in 1998 (the year > >after I implanted). Guest guest
I could never get anyone to prescribe Armour, and my Naturopath recommended that I take the Synthroid, as Armour was difficult to regulate and took many tests to be sure it was the right dosage. So, since Synthroid works I have just stayed with it. According to Weight Watchers, I am 20 pounds overweight, according to me, I am 40 pounds overweight. I certainly am 40 over what I was prior to cancer, implants, fibromyalgia, thyroid problems, autoimmune problems, etc. Lynda At 09:55 PM 9/6/2006, you wrote: >I don't want to say I am glad other women who had implants face >weight issues, but it is >nice to know I am not alone. > >I too have Hashimoto's and was evidently untreated for who knows how >long. The only place that has water aerobics here are a couple of rec centers (15 and 30 miles away). I don't drive, but when I did drive I checked into taking yoga at either one. (My doctor tells me not to go beyond yoga, btw, with degenerative joint diseases -for anyone who may have that.) Between gas and 'per time' fees and/or membership, it would have cost at least $60-$80/mo. I couldn't afford that. (Not to stray off topic, but I tried yoga and pilates both at home... they absolutely make my joints throb and make my muscles feel like they're ripping. I think I'm too heavy to bear weight on my joints, but if someone isn't as over weight as I am --- they really are fairly easy to do otherwise. The CURVES workout is also super easy, it just creates pressure in my brain aggravating PTC.) We used to have a wonderful gym not too far away that had a pool. Myself and my sister worked there many years ago... It has since closed. They had great programs. (My sis was their aerobics instructor.) I used to take aerobics, as well as work out there almost daily the years before I got sick (and also before I worked for an ins. company who had a gym).............. Now it's a day care center. lol Brig
Guest guest
Lynda, I'm horrified to hear what happened with the silicone dumped in your chest! Thank God you made it through that. There must be a few more guardian angels assigned to some of us....it makes you wonder. I'm so happy you made it through. Lately, when I share my story with people, and trust me...I've been yakking to anyone and everyone who asks " what surgery did you have? " I get emotional because I was actually closer to dying than I'd like to admit. Please tell me what happened with Lea. I didn't know she had to remove her posts and story??? Where was I when this happened? I'm going to Edmonton for 2 days and will phone her and say hi. Guest guest
I can see where yoga would be stressful to your joints. Doctors have the misconception that yoga is always gentle and doesn't cause injuries. I have a shoulder injury that was caused by yoga. I get the biggest laughs from doctors when I tell them. Water aerobics is very gentle and would be really helpful for you if you can find a way to get to a pool. Some physical therapy rehabs have prescription classes if you have medical insurance. If you do, just ask your doctor to write out a prescription for it. Gentle movement is going to be the key for you to lose weight and not be in pain. I have heard that Tai Chi is very good but I don't know anything at all about it. Kenda > > That's a good suggestion, though I haven't tried that. Guest guest
I think Armour works for many of us with implant problems better, as it provides both T3 and T4. Synthroid only has T4, and is given on the assumption that our bodies will convert the T4 to T3 as needed. Only, for alot of women, that never happens! I take Armour, and at one time was also taking Cytomel (T3). I'd never take anything else. Guest guest
The only thing I have heard about Armour is that it is not regulated to the point that all of the pills are the same dosage. Guest guest
I have heard that Armour and Westhroid are harder to regulate in the body but nothing about each pill different than another. That is plain garbage. Natural thyroid supplements are made like any other medication, in a regulated, controlled environment. Guest guest
Yep, I think that is plain garbage also, it just takes more time to check levels and make sure it is right sometimes. But I would imagine that overall it is better for our bodies. I am on Synthroid, as my doctors would never prescribe the Armour for me. Guest guest
My doc said the same thing - armour is hard to titrate. The fact is, the pharmas push synthroid, because it is more expensive. I convinced my doc that I was doing better since I changed to Armour, and she now agrees and will prescribe this for me. The problem is that there seems to be a shortage, or backlog.... I fear that Armour may be discontinued. I don't know what I will do if that happens. > >> > >>> For those who've not seen me say this before, I'll add my weight > >>> issues to the > >>> convo... > >>> 100 pounds weight gain here, over 1 year span in 1998 (the year > >>> after I implanted). Guest guest
Wow! Isn't that odd! Can they substitute Westhroid for it? Kenda > I take armour and had trouble getting it recently. Guest guest
Armour and Westhroid are supposed to be very similar. You could switch over to Westhroid if Armour is discontinued. I'll have to ask Dr. Leu the difference between the two. He has me on Westhroid. Guest guest
I don't know. I got my prescription, but had to get all 1 grain tablets, when I usually get 4 g & 1 g tablets (I take 5 g). And that was hard to find. I know there have been rumors for some time that the manuf. was going to discontinue it, but it has not happened so far. I hope this is just temporary. It is very frustrating because synthroid is more expensive and less effective. > >>> > >>>> For those who've not seen me say this before, I'll add my weight > >>>> issues to the > >>>> convo... > >>>> 100 pounds weight gain here, over 1 year span in 1998 (the year > >>>> after I implanted). Guest guest
Absolutely you can have a thyroid issue and have normal TSH levels. Many doctors will fail to test for anti-TPO or thryoid antibodies. You can have an autoimmune thyroid disease and yet have normal thryroid functioning. I myself am not sure that I believe "Aging" is a good explanation for any symptoms. Aging doesn't have to mean that all of our organs fail us, especially at our relatively young ages. Maybe at 80 or 90, but certainly not in our 40's or 30's or 20's. I am not sure how I would suggest a plan of action. What are you doing now? Patty"jdebolt@..." <jdebolt@...> wrote: Can you have an thyroid issue, and still have normal results on the tests? Is there another way to test besides the Free... T3 and T4, thyroid antibodies, and Ferritin? How about Adrenals? It IS hard to seperate the symptoms, since they do mimic implant related symptoms. I do know that I have ALL the symptoms, and that it has been since implant. BUT I also know that I am older now, (41) and some is just age related isn't it?
