And, if you don't let your child wear >>his/her aids, how do you communicate? I have been off line now for about three weeks due to a computer melt down. I had over 600 messages to read so if this has already been addressed please forgive me. If Petya doesn't have her aids on she communicates with sign. This is why it was important to me that she learn sign. My feeling is that she has the right to communication with or without her aids. I had to fight the school over the issue because she does so well with her aids. She is an oral child. With aids she can hear at about 25 to 30 dB. (This is best case scenario, as she has a fluctuating loss and sometimes she is not this good.) Right now for example her hearing is down and she can't hear on the phone so she uses the TTY. Normally she uses the regular phone without trouble. Sign has been a blessing for her. It allows her to understand the swimming teacher when she is in the pool. She always has an interperter. It allows the two of us to communicate when she has an ear infection and the doctor has told her not to wear her aids for a few days. She will tell me not to sign to her when she doesn't need it and tells me when she is not hearing well enough to get information auditorially. In her case too it helps her learn. She has CAPD and the way around the difficulty of learning language is to teach her a sign or how to fingerspell a word. Once she has seen it then she can remember it auditorially. This results in needing to give every person we know sign names. She cannot remember names given only hearing them. This ends up with her calling our pastor " that bald guy who stands up and talks in church " or the signing aide at school " the old lady at school " . So we give them sign names and then she can learn the name and drops the sign. Barb

My daughter is in a similar predictament but she is only three and that's why I am teaching her both in case of the future she can choose which one she needs. We are having a hard trying to the school system how it is so important for her to learn both because of the fluctuations. I glad to hear how well it's working. lori
