Guest guest
Folks: We use PSE with Hanni. A pidgin, by the way, is a generic term for a hybrid language which uses vocabulary from one language with grammar from another. Pidgin Englishes are spoken in many parts of the world and often develope their own complex grammars. Pidgin sign uses ASL vocabulary, and as such is no more regional than ASL is, that is it's extremely regional. People who use PSE vary in how strictly they use English word order and whether or not they put in ASLisms (i.e. for " very big " some people would sign " very " + " big " , but others would stretch their arms far apart while signing " big " ). There is a lot of variation. Like we chose to use PSE to get a lot of vocabulary quickly. We weren't spending a lot of energy learning a new grammar. Hanni has been gradually transitioning to more ASL as she picks it up from her aunts and uncles and classmates. Yesterday I told her " We go-to meet mother. " I signed " meet " with two d-hands approaching each other. Hanni stopped me, indicated the two of us, made a v-hand, and signed the v-hand approaching a d-hand, i.e. the two of us meeting mom. I thought that was so cute, and very ASL. I told my brother about it and he didn't see it as any big step, just a natural development. Leon Leon Metlay and Nina Klionsky metlionsky@...
