Guest guest
Sandy, I had terrible panic attacks and depression as well when I was sick with implants. I had never had either problem before. Three things I did that helped my mental state alot: daily meditation for about 15 minutes, took 5 grams/day of fish oil, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The meditation part can be really simple, the simplest would being to sit in a chair and repeat a mantram or spiritual passage in your head with your eyes closed. There is a wonderful spiritual teacher named Eknath Easwaren who has some great books and tapes that teach meditation and the spiritual life for beginners. What's great about him is that thought he is of a Hindu background, he is inclusive of all the great faiths and uses teachings from all of them. You can even sign up to have a "thought for the day" sent to you each day by email, it's just a spiritual excerpt and short commentary-- very uplifting. You can find him at http://www.easwaran.org/nilgiri.cfm?pageid=5001. Basically, it's about finding an inner strength and centeredness so that your physical issues don't rule your life. I definitely know how hard it is when you're not well-- I was there, too! The fish oil is really good for mood stabilization, and many other things. If you have problems with depression, especially in the winter, it will help with that as well. The cognitive behavior therapy is similiar to the meditation, in that you are retraining your mind/body. Specifically, training yourself not to react with the strong physical sensations you get with panic attacks. You can use relaxation tapes or self-hypnosis tapes, especially at bedtime, and over time your mind will stop triggering your body to react with all the freaky panic symptoms-- the beating heart, dizziness, fright, sweating. If you still have implants (I forgot, are you getting them out soon?) some of the panicky stuff is from your body reacting to the implants, but the meditation and relaxation exercises will still help ALOT. One thing I learned from all of this was to get down to what's really important to me and my loved ones and stop worrying about the bullshit. I hope you feel better soon!
