Guest guest
Hello, I am new to this list. I am the mother of a almost 5-year old HoH girl. Kathy has a severe bi-lateral hearing loss that appears to be progressive. Like so many others, we had no indicators for hearing loss and so Kathy wasn't tested until we put our foot down with her pediatrician. Kathy was diagnosed at 2 1/2 and is maintaining a 1 year delay through the help of good hearing aids, a good audiologist and great teachers. Kathy is mainly oral. We sign to her when her aids are off and she responds with speech. I have so many questions, but my big questions right now are with placement. Special day kindergarten vs. holding her back a year in a good special preschool and then starting mainstream kindergarten. How can you tell if a child is ready for mainstream? What do they need to know how to do, socially and cognitively? Is it better to be too prepared for kindergarten and suceed or will a bright child just get bored and fail anyway? Mainstreaming means no peers and little support, but a more challenging school. Is is worth it? What were your kids experiences in the early grades? What worked? What would you try to differently? Lots of questions.... Thanks for all your help. Terri aka Kathy's Mom

You are in the right place; I've only been a member of this list for a few months and learned a TREMENDOUS amount from the people here.
