Guest guest
Great movie, thanks for the link, Happyout! I remember being so riveted by that film the first time I saw it (on TV when I was a young teen, I think.) There was so much about it that rang true for me: the way the mother was so coldly hateful and critical and expected her daughter to be her robot/servant, etc. I would classify the mother as a " Queen " bpd, or perhaps as a combo narcissist/sociopath pd, myself: cold, dictator-like, no empathy, no remorse. Bette is so good in this film, too. Love it! Another great film along these same lines, but featuring a cold and despising father and a too-good-to-be-true suitor, is " The Heiress " with Olivia de Havilland in the title role. It won some oscars, and is based on a short story by Henry (who also wrote the eerie and haunting " The Turn of the Screw " , which was made into the film " The Innocents " Its probably one of the first films to even hint at the subject of child molestation.) Yet another good film about an insane father (probably a narcissit) tyrannizing his family is " The Barretts of Wimpole Street " starring Laughton as crazy dad. It's probably the first film ever to even hint at the subject of incest. (Made in 1934!) And while we're listing good old films about insanity, if you've ever heard the phrase " I'm being gaslighted " , its referring to the film " Gaslight " , starring Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. The phrase means deliberately trying to drive someone crazy. The film is about a young woman who is swept off her feet by a handsome older man, who actually has an evil ulterior motive.
