dusty - drains are only for a few days after surgery to drain excess fluids that build up - I think they MUST be used to avoid complications and infections, etc... I think many of my problems now are because my surgeon that did my explant did NOT use drains after my surgery so all that nasty fluid that leaked out of the implants during the implants plus the regular stuff from the surgery just sat there instead of draining out and caused a massive infection in my chest... I had to have mine manually drained in his office after explant twice because of this and took a very long time to heal... I have been told By Dr. Kolb that this could have been a major factor in my illnesses now as all that bacteria and infection was left in my chest instead of draining out so I could heal properly... If I could go back, I would make sure that I demanded drains with my explant... when I have my next surgery to have my chest cleaned out and the possible infection and remaining capsules removed I will have drains for sure... they only remain for a few days - as long as the body is forcing fluid to the area.... just my opinion but I feel they are imperative to proper healing....

Sandy, Drains will not be a bad thing....they are only temporary, and in for a few days to drain any fluid building up in the breast pocket after removal of implants or capsules. Drains are a good idea so that all that pathogenic fluid will be allowed to leave your body rather than remaining inside and causing more havoc. Not all doctors use drains. You usually have to request them, from what I've experienced, and many times doctors will refuse to use them. Again, I would be insistent that they are needed. I am to scared to put anything foreign in my body again, Sandy~ Congrats on going in for your surgery,I have my residual capsuectomey sceduled this wednesday. just tightly bandaged, she said for fluid buid up. she doesn't want to put another foreign object like the drain in with the high chance of infection in my case. she said if we get to much fluid build up she can go in sterile with the biopsy needle and drain if it is needed, I guess all surgeons have their way of doing these procedures, I do trust her she is very caring and takes her time, on her card it says, " a great surgeon should have the eyes of an eagle, heart of a lion, hands of a woman..." Sandy, It depends on the doctor, how long they leave the drains in. I've been hearing that some doctors leave them in for a week, but others leave them in for several days. Dr. Melmed only leaves them in for one day, unless there is some infection I think. They are kinda gross, but they seem to be necessary. He told me mine would be coming out the next day, and when I went back, it looked like I was still draining, but I don't know-I was still emptying the containers, and it was bright red blood. But he said he was taking them out that day, so I didn't argue with him. He said they were "clear" and I didn't understand that...I mean, they were filled with pure blood, not "clear" at all, but he said he meant that they were not clotted or something, so I guess that was good.Tricia Trish <glory2glory1401@...> wrote: Sandy, Drains will not be a bad thing....they are only temporary, and in for a few days to drain any fluid building up in the breast pocket after removal of implants or capsules.
