I'm sure that when it came through the duct it came through the easiest way (lengthwise). The bile duct is evidently pliable, too, which helps in the passing of the larger stones. I have done a LOT of reading about this (as most of us have, I'm sure) and I have NEVER read of anyone getting a stone lodged and requiring emergency intervention. I have read (in the naysayers information) several cautions about this possibly happening. I have read (in this who recommend surgery) that this is a possibility. But I have never read of a case where it actually happened. I'm not saying that it never has - just that it seems interesting that I haven't come across any case history of it. So, while I understand that it is a concern for a lot of people, I just think that if it really was as much of a possibility, the naysayers would have case histories out there in print of people who have had problems. So I choose not to worry about it. That's just my perspective on it.
