Bindi, That's awesome! But don't you have to go by some strict diet while on guai? I upped my dosage of 5-HTP last night, and woke up with no pain also! Yaaah for both of us!freebindi <bindi@...> wrote: Okay, now don't get too excited. Last night I took 600 mg of guaifenesin, and this morning I took another 600. Before I tell you of my results, I wanted to share a link I found to an article by a man who has had fibromyalgia for many

years and did a lot of research on guaifenesin, basically to investigate the claims and myths. Here is the article any case any of you want to read it: http://web.mit.edu/london/www/guai.html Anyway, it is really long, but fascinating, as it goes into detail about the many theories of the causes of fibromyalgia and has a lot of links to medical research articles. He explains why he thinks guai works for some people. He believes that one of the effects of guai is as a muscle relaxant. It comes from the guaiac tree, which has been used for more than 100 years to treat rheumatism and other conditions. Last night I decided to try it.This morning I woke up for the first time in two years with no stiffness and almost no pain.

Could I be experiencing a placebo affect? Maybe. I'm going to keep taking it and Iet you all know what happens, but for now I feel very encouraged, because for me the pain is my most difficult symptom. Bindi

There is a theory that one must go on a no-salicylate diet and avoid topical salicylates, which means anything that has plant-based substances in it, but Mark London, who wrote the article, claims this isn't necessary. I decided to try guai without doing the whole protocol. I forgot about 5-htp. I'm going to try that too!

Bindi, Oh, that's good that it's not necessary to follow a strict diet! I may try it again too then! Are you taking a prescription strength, or OTC? There's a drugstore here that sells it OTC.... As for the 5-HTP, the recomended dosage is 100mg, three times a day. I've been only doing 50mg twice a day for awhile now. I noticed a tiny bit of improvement when I started it, but it was clearly not enough. I increased my dosage last night to 100mg and woke up in no pain at all! Took 100mg a few minutes ago-we'll see if I can tell a difference on my first day back to work...on the busiest day we have...*groan*freebindi <bindi@...> wrote: There is a theory that one must go on a no-salicylate diet and avoid topical salicylates, which means anything that has plant-based substances in it, but Mark London, who wrote the article, claims this isn't necessary. I take 5HTP too. It helps with sleep and is also a natural anti-depressant.

I take it because my labs indicate that I am low tryptophan.

Is this sold under this name or under another product name? Thanks freebindi <bindi@...> wrote: I have not felt any side-effects so far with guaifenesin. Bindi Re: Tried Guaifenesin Thanks ....did it make you feel anxious ?

I bought the 600 mg and am using them 2 x/day. But you can split the caps and use 1/2 if you want to. So far I feel less pain overall and a little more energy, but am a little spacey(more than usual!)-- hopefully this is a temporary side-effect.

Mucinex is what I use. It is kind of expensive but if it works what the heck.

Where can you get less than 600 mgs ? I wanted to try something smaller first....does it help with headaches, muscle aches etc....

Mine was in my neck and shoulders BAD...always just on one side though. Dr. Melmed said it was always on my right side becuase I am right handed. He told me to try to use my left hand as much as possible...(why, so I can have pain on BOTH sides? LOL)GMCLADY98@... wrote: Did you girls have neck and back pain ? Is it better or gone ?

Patty,

I took the guai for a couple of days, and it helped greatly with my pain, but also made me dopey and dizzy. I took a break for a few days and the pain resumed, but not as bad. Now I am taking it just at night, 300 mg, before I go to bed. I do not do the anti-salicylate protocol, as is recommended by the man who promotes this treatment. I am not sure I believe his "phosphate theory" and want to see if it will help me on its own. Plus doing the protocol would mean giving up all my herbs and supplements, and I just can't do it!

Guaifenesin is sold both by prescription and over-the-counter. The most common brand in my local store is Mucinex. Here it cost $45 for 100 300mg tablets (ouch!) I know you can find it online, probably cheaper. It is a drug, but a very safe one.

I know guai isn't for everyone, but given the amazing relief that many people have gotten from it, it's worth looking into. When I was reading about it on Remedyfind, there were dozens and dozens of people who gave it a "ten", and then the occasional person for whom it did not work. It is still a mystery why it helps some people and not others.

Hey Bindi,

That is too bad about the guai making you dopey and dizzy. I also experienced that with several different supplements (like Mannatech's product Ambrotose). It is really sad because you have so much hope for something working, only to find out that it makes you worse! But the big question I have, is that because something is wrong and I need to stop taking it, or is that because it is working, and I need to get past the hump? It's the million dollar question for those of us doing alternative therapies and going the extra mile to get better. It's hard to know sometimes.

I tried the Ambrotose until I couldn't take it anymore. Same with the Gerson therapy that made me do dopey and dizzy. It was all those green drinks that did it. I just had to back off of doing it, even though as a general rule, we know that green drinks and lots of veggies are good for us. Now I take those kind of things very slowly.

How is it working with a reduced dosage?

Hi Patty,

I started up again on the guaifenesin, 2xday, along with the anti-salicylate protocol. I am only one week into it, but I am experiencing some improvement. Supposedly one should feel worse for a while before better, so I may have to increase my dose to get the full effects, but I think it is helping. It is a medication, and the protocol is annoying and goes against my desire to use herbs (one has to avoid plant-based supplements while on guai) but I figure it was worth a try.

Thanks for checking in~ I'll keep you posted!
