Guest guest
Here, they have non-invasive colonoscopies at one place. (If WE have it, I'm sure most of you all do, too.) My mom had a colonoscopy, and during recovery her blood pressure went WAY low (the top number was in the 70's), and she started vomitting and fainting, and they brought out the big heart cart and made me leave the room. It turned out to be --she was allergic to Demerol (and we hadn't known). I guess they use that with conscious sedation. It was horrible... so now, years later, I can't get her to do it again, despite that they have the non-invasive (camera pill) now. Anyway, I was going to say... Mom is a senior, but she isn't real "old" to me. (She's 62, and I don't find that what people imagine "old" to be at all, even though she ACTS old!) She has been a fairly desciplined vegetarian (though not Vegan) for my entire life. She lives off salads, veggies, breads, cereals, and fruit --- and they STILL told her she had polyps and needed more fiber! So, apparently you can never have enough fiber! They have it in tasteless powders now you can even add to food. Maybe it's one of those things that's never too early to start. Brig
Guest guest
When I had braces, got them off two years ago and had them for 26 months, I got them all the time. Wish I would have known about GSE then! I have used it a couple of times, as have my kids. It really has been like magic! Your story with your mom is much like with my husband a couple of days ago. I had a colonoscopy and had to drink the Fleet stuff. It was WAY worse than GSE!!! It is SO salty and the taste can't be covered up, I have goose bumps just writing about it -- YUCK! I told him how horrible it was and he just looked at me. I asked him to taste it and just touched his tongue to the cup and got the nastiest look on his face -- the one I had when I was chugging the stuff! At the end of the day, he told me that he could still taste the salty taste. Gee, poor guy, I drank two bottles of it, I could still taste it yesterday too! Ok, here's my pitch for Colonoscopies ... I know Rogene had one recently too. I am 46 years old and am pretty young to have had one. I am extremely regular and have been for 10 years. I, too, had a polyp removed. It is being biopsied and my doctor does not think it is cancer but polyps can turn cancerous over time. Had I not had it removed, no telling what I could have been dealing with in the future. The test is not painful in the least and I was given Versed to knock me out for it. I was asleep but not in a general anesthetic. Versed wears off very quickly. The worst part is drinking the salty stuff and I'd recommend asking for the pills, if you have no problem swallowing pills. I believe there are 32 pills to take. I wasn't given the choice but I'll ask for them next time -- because there will be a next time. Ok, speech over. Kenda > Very cool to know about the canker sores. Guest guest
I would recommend against the non-invasive colonoscopies. If you have one and they find polyps, they can't remove them at that time. You'll have to reschedule and go through the cleansing process all over again. Once was enough for me. Guest guest
Me too . .. The cleansing process was the worst part of it . . Kenda, about 1 1/2 years ago, I did the same cleansing process as you recently did. . . It was horrible . . . I felt as though my gut had been skinned . . . for months. . . The doctor told me that this was very unusual . . . It was all for naught because about the time I was finishing the process, we got snowed in and I couldn't make to town. I delayed rescheduling it because I didn't want to drink that stuff! and hurt so bad again. . . But, it was necessary, because colon cancer is often associated with breast cancer. . . Anyway . .. this time, I took some pills and drank only a small amount of nasty stuff - after being on a clear liquid diet for a few days . . . What amazed me was that most of the things suggested for the clear liquid diet were loaded with sugar. If I drank that stuff, I'd really have been in trouble! This time my gut didn't complain. Still, I"m glad I did the colonscopy this time .. . I have to repeat it in four months because she removed a large polyp that can be a precursor to cancer. Guest guest
Rogene, My mother had colon cancer in her early 80's, so they want me to do one again in 5 years. I had the horrible reactions also, so am dreading ever doing that process again. I also am a breast cancer survivor, 16 1/2 years. Lynda At 02:23 PM 8/2/2006, you wrote: >Me too . .. Guest guest
Oh Lynda, I know . . . but, better catch those polyps before they become something worse! It's a huge inconvenience, but considering the possilibities, it's worth it in peace of mind! Rogene
Guest guest
A funny thing happened with me. I took the Fleet at night at 6:15, expecting that within 30 minute so, the diarrhea would start. I read all kinds of information on the internet about people living in their bathrooms over night, some even in pain. Nothing happened! I drank eight 20 oz glasses of water and still, no diarrhea, although one little pooh. I drank the next bottle of Fleet at 7:30 the next morning and nothing happened! I phoned the doctor's office and explained that nothing was happening. They couldn't believe that after two bottles of Fleet, I didn't have the necessary watery diarrhea. They told me that I needed to keep drinking tons of water and that if nothing happened, the doctor would postpone my procedure. I finally went to the bathroom a handful of times but no where near what the literature said I would, just enough to pass the water I drank. The strange part is that it was clear right away. I drink fiber powder in my smoothie every day. Obviously the fiber powder is doing its job! My doc said this was very uncommon. I was glad to know that I wasn't full of it! Kenda > >> Me too . .. Guest guest
No wet towel. I have had lots of lab tests, my problem is my metabolism, not food absorption. But to be sure, my gastro did run a stool test last week. I'm still waiting on the results but I have had the test run before, more than once, and it was fine. Food isn't racing through me, I wasn't able to eat for 36 hours prior to the colonoscopy so there shouldn't have been much to dump if my bowels were emptying as they should. It was a good thing, just a rarity for my gastro to see. With the typical American diet, not enough fiber is usually consumed to keep the bowels moving as they should. We shouldn't be full of crap but most of us are. Kenda > Kenda . .. . > > Not to throw a wet towel on things . . but didn't you say you have problems > maintaining your weight? . .. Guest guest
Hi Patty, Yes, I got the results, the polyp was not cancer. You really ought to reconsider your decision not to have a colonoscopy. Everyone at age 50 ought to have one, after age 40 with a family history of polyps. It frightens me to think that what would have happened if it hadn't been removed. Guest guest
Kenda, The stuff I had to drink was called half-lytely, and not bad tasting. But, I had lots of side effects, shaking, nausea, cramping, and it took my body almost a month to return to its normal chemistry afterwards. But, my mother had colon cancer, and I will have to do it again sometime, they want 5 years, but probably it will take me longer than that and a different form of prep to be willing to do it again. Guest guest
Hi Lynda, I had read a lot on line prior to my colonoscopy. Half-lytely and Go-lytely were considered to be much more violent than Fleet. I think the key, at least in my experience, is to eat lightly for a couple of days prior to the colonoscopy, eating a lot of fiber to keep your bowels moving. By doing this, your bowels will have little to empty when you take the laxative. I had absolutely no cramping or ill-effects at all, other than terrible taste -- and it was absolutely horrible! I have to do it again because of my polyp and I plan to use the pills to avoid the taste. I hope it works as gently as the Fleet did. Kenda > Kenda, > > The stuff I had to drink was called half-lytely, and not bad > tasting. Guest guest
Hi Kenda, Yes, I researched it also. There is a new one called Nu-lytely that is half as much and works just as well. Other people take other things. This doctor insists on half-lytely, so I may have to go elsewhere next time. I heard of an 84 year old woman in Calif. who just took one pill and drank lots of water and that was all she had to do. Must be a better way than what I did. I pretty much always have a high fiber diet. Lynda At 07:45 AM 8/9/2006, you wrote: >Hi Lynda, > >I had read a lot on line prior to my colonoscopy.
