Guest guest
Tina, I also learned to read with Dick and Jane. The main criticisms of these books were that many kids were not interested in the stories and there weren't many characters of different ethnicities. I think your daughter could learn to read from them just find if she is interested in them. I also have a book that I have used for some of my lower students who needed to get the phonics part down. I used it for a while with them and then moved on to other books once they got the hang of it. The stories weren't that interesting, but i would have the kids sit right by me and would help them move their fingers under the words and stuff like that. They were motivated a lot just from the attention they were getting. I can't recall the name of this book at the moment. It's at school, so I will have to look next week. But I used it last year with two girls who were not catching on to reading at all, and after about 4-6 weeks of 10 minutes a day, they had learned to sound out words. It has dots under the words and the kids move their fingers under the dots as they make each letter sound. I think this would help someone with dyslexia as it keeps them from making the last sound first as many of them tend to do. But it also depends on what level your daughter is already reading at. Remind me next week to look up the name of the book for you. Another thing that has helped a lot is to make up your own books with your daughter. For example, if I want to teach the word " what " , I would have the child help me make up a book. Like on every page I would write " What is this? " . And the child would answer with something they like such as " This is my bike. " and we would keep that same pattern over and over for several pages. Then I would have the child draw the pictures to match the words on each page. Then I would have then highlight or underline the sight word that I wanted them to learn. Then I would have them read the book every day until they got the word down good. And then add anothebook with a new word to learn in a few days. Anyway, that's a couple of ideas. Feel free to write me offlist if you want. If I knew more of what level your daughter is and what her school expects her to know at this point, I might have some more ideas for you. I personally think a phonics approach works best, but where I teach we are expected to teach them tons of sight words. > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane.I just wondered what you thought about these books?Do you think, they can help teach kids to read that are having problems?Anyway,I have bought some newly printed Dick and Jane Books and have been having my daughter read them.I was looking at some old textbooks. They want lots of money for them. Some how,I feel the old ways were better. >
Guest guest
Tina, I couldn't resist telling you one more idea. I've also bought stickers of popular characters and made up little books about the characters. My students loved those books. And I've used the puffy colored glue or glitter glue to make flashcards of words or letters that they could feel in addition to seeing. I think this has been very effective for some of my struggling readers. > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane.I just wondered what you thought about these books?Do you think, they can help teach kids to read that are having problems?Anyway,I have bought some newly printed Dick and Jane Books and have been having my daughter read them.I was looking at some old textbooks. They want lots of money for them. Some how,I feel the old ways were better. >
Guest guest
Thankyou for your reply.I agree, the stories are not that interesting,I just think they are easy to read, and maybe help the struggling reader. She makes nooks at school a lot.I have most of the books she made in kindergarden, and first grade.I buy lots of used books at this used store near our house.I have had to go through and periodically get rid of some. She likes to be read to,and I think, she learns alot from being read to.I think, sometimes she struggles to read so bad that she cannot get any meaning from what she reads.More so,if i read it to her.I do have her try.Until, she is to frustrated or tired, and then that is it.We do have a wide assortment of books.Dr Seuss, little golden books, lots of Scholastic,Disney,Old children`s books and new characters kids like.Sight word and ryming word books.Thankyou again for your reply. > > > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane.I just wondered what you thought about these books?Do you think, they can help teach kids to read that are having problems?Anyway,I have bought some newly printed Dick and Jane Books and have been having my daughter read them.I was looking at some old textbooks. They want lots of money for them. Some how,I feel the old ways were better. > > >
Guest guest
Hi Tina, I joined this book group some time ago, but never did much with selling or buying on it. Hope it helps. I loved books and our parents loved to read, and we were in a book club when a child. Even though I could read well, still had a bit of problems with B and D. I would picture a bed, with the B and D, and that helped me. I also had bad handwriting, and still do. Have you checked out J Cannell website. He was a tv producer that had Dyslexia. http://www.cannell.com/learning-center.html UsedHomeSchoolBooks-subscribe C. > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane.I just wondered what you thought about these books?Do you think, they can help teach kids to read that are having problems?Anyway,I have bought some newly printed Dick and Jane Books and have been having my daughter read them.I was looking at some old textbooks. They want lots of money for them. Some how,I feel the old ways were better. >

Guest guest
Hi Tina, Yes, he produced it, and on his site, there is a picture behind the scenes of that show. His Stingray series is one of my favorite shows, although I have seen many of his shows. He mentions having short term memory problems especially. Although the diet will help with many forms of autism, I am wondering if it will help with dyslexia, as he mentions it seems to be inherited. I have many of the traits of Aspergers, and the diet certainly helped with that. As for my traits of dyslexia, I do have minor issues with it. My typing is certainly different after being on the diet, as it helps me speed up, but I tend to jump letters, or put a letter before another. Perhaps my brain is working on this, and I know I plenty of healing left to do. Best wishes on this. c > > > > > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane. >

Guest guest
Also,,I have terrible short term memory problems. Was reading this book called Balance Your brain,Balance Your Life, and it talks about the neurotransmitter Acytl-Choline and a deficiency being resposibile for learning and memory problems. These doctors that wrote the book treat kids with ASD for neurotransmitter problems. Also mentions something about a lack of empathy being a neurotransmitter deficiency.I can`t recall which one,i`d have to go back and look or google it.Had bought some suppleemnts to try boosting our acytl-cholie levels and then,it kind of fell by the wayside.Reason being,my daughter would get car sick on the bus going to school,if I try and give to many supplements in the morning. Her bus come before 7:00 A.M somedays. We are rushing around trying to get ready. Then,we were doing vision therapy, and not without meltdowns,so,she wasn`t getting many supplements.Done with vision therapy, and i`m tryimg to get more supplements in her. Also me.I forget to take my stuff,at times. > > > > > > > > > > i learned to read with Dick and Jane. > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Tina, i used to have some stomach issues when eating beef, but after on Bee's diet for a while, I could handle it a lot better, and actually began to really crave beef, and eat a lot of it. Also too, I started eating the fat on it, when I used to discard the fat. Bee had said something about whether to give kids hydrochloric acid, if it was though to be needed. I never had to take it myself. there is a guy on ebay who sells comic books on dvd. I ordered some western ones, but it will be a few days before I get them. He has some bible stories ones, and some fairy tales, and lots of westerns. http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMPLETE-Golden-Age-Bible-Comics-Comics-Books-DVD-3-Sets\ -1940s-50s-/220928797091?pt=US_Comic_Books & hash=item337061e9a3 c > > Thankyou .I think,I am mildly dyslexic.I think my husband has it.I went to bed early last night,so have not looked at that stuff you mentioned yet,but I will.Thankyou also for that other autism diet info.My son has been on gluten free casien free, all natural diet for along time, but,I think,he may need GAPS or something. Not sure he can break down meat though. Guest guest
Hi .I got my GAPS book today.Have not started reading it.Regarding the HCL,He can`t swallow pills or capsules and I can`t open that one up and put on food, like I do most of his supplements. The HCL will burn him.I do have some.I use myself when the need arrives.Thankyou for your reply. > > > > Thankyou .I think,I am mildly dyslexic.I think my husband has it.I went to bed early last night,so have not looked at that stuff you mentioned yet,but I will.Thankyou also for that other autism diet info.My son has been on gluten free casien free, all natural diet for along time, but,I think,he may need GAPS or something. Not sure he can break down meat though. >
