Portal Hypertension and flying

Hi Group,

I was wondering if flying is restricted if you have portal hypertension, as my son (, 14) is asking to go to Italy with his school this coming spring. Is it risky to travel out of the country given his condition? I would of course accompany the group (with alot of pharmaceutical assistance to conquer my pre and post 9/11 paranoia). Can flying cause pressure changes that can affect varices (it is suspected but not confirmed that he has them)? Aubrey, Tim, anybody have any input?
