The federal government's decision to license the sale of silicone gel breast implants is coming under fire from outraged former patients, but a Calgary plastic surgeon defends the product. Lea , a breast-implant support group leader in Edmonton, has had two sets of silicone gel implants since 1974 and claims the synthetic product is responsible for her beleaguered health.

" I'm very, very angry and I'm very disappointed with Health Canada, " , 67, said yesterday.

blames her silicone breast implants for a litany of health issues, including multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis and lupus. Yet Calgary plastic surgeon Dr. Dale Birdsell applauds Health Canada's approval of what he says are new-age breast implants. " It's not the (same silicone) gel implant that got in trouble, " he said. The latest product is made of a cohesive gel that won't leak, said Birdsell, adding there is no proof silicone implants cause adverse health effects.

He would applaud Health Canada's decision because it will help him to implant more women. This is all about money and power, and he is admitting that the old silicone breast implants were unsafe. He has not been listening to his patients who have had their lives destroyed by these devices. We could put him in a bag along with Wally and dump them out and we would not be able to tell who is who!!

What should we do about this tragic decision? I am happy that Health Canada is being sued. I had asked for a Royal Commission (Judical Inquiry) to look into this tragedy many years ago, but no one would listen. Dr. Zuckerman's comments were great regarding this decision because she knows that we are in a World that is broken. Women can be replaced.
