Guest guest
Emmett, I am 53 years old dx in 1996 but believe it all started in 1991 with my voice becoming strained the vocal cord were being forced together had botox injections in the vocal cords it worked my voice improved not normal my voice at the beginning became deeper pitched but at least I could talk. Then 5 year later I passed out in the store for a few seconds -went to the doctor - no heart attack- called a common faint. So I went on with my life -then I began to have tingle in my right leg from the knee down and my right hand it came and went then I began to stomble my right foot - and I stopped having my period if that has anything to do with it who knows. Went to nero battery of test EMG, deep muscle biospocy (sp). spinal tap, blood work . all normal. Went to MS spec. in Tampa- no MS. Final dx PLS. So to get your question yes I beleive excerise is good the more you move those muscle the better off you are. I do house work- the only thing I cant do is vacumn. I still get on my hands and knee and mop the floor I am tried afterwards but I feel that at else tried. In the morning I watch a TV excerise program for the elerly mostly sitting in a chair or using it to balance . It helps to pull out those muscles. I cannot use a cane my balance is to bad I use a four wheel walker with seat and hand brakes -I use it inside the house and in stores that do not have shopping cart-for long outing I use a elec scootor. My strength is somewhat affected my Nero is surprised at the sength I have I can lift a 25 lb bag of cat litter but I cannot move it anywere without falling- I move things like sofa if I get down on my hand and knees and pull -I cant use my arm to push. To move it back in place I use my legs to push. Weird . I do go on. Flora/St Pete Fl.
Guest guest
Emmett: I also had to take an early retirement,I should say sell out my business because of my failing speech.I try to workout everyday, usually start with the machines, starting with the treadmill, then going onto to the presses, etc, spending about 1hr-11/2,then the pool for 90mins.I do 15-20 laps(25meter pool)not very fast, water walk for 1/2hr.finish with the whirl pool. My left side is also my worst side, arms and hands are not effected, nor is my respiratory system,I have had no change since 95.I continue to do most of my yard work,I have a lawn tractor with a trailer, which makes things easier,I do edging with a hand clipper, cannot use the edger,my balance is very poor.I use a cane most of the time, however if I take a trip to the mall, where I expect to do a lot of walking I will use a wheel walker. To better my speech I use a prosthesis,I'm sure you may have read some of the messages I have written in the past discribing it,so I will spare you the details. Take care,C.
Guest guest
, I haven't talked with you for some time now. I am very interested in the amount of exercise you do. After I have ridden my stationary recumbent bicycle for 25 minutes, I get really tired and am still tired the next day. When I do the minor weight lifting, the same thing occurs. In fact, I have had to lower the amount of weight I use during some exercises. That bothers me. I have listened to everyone talk about which side is their weakest and the left side seems to come out as the winner. That's mine, too. However, the symptoms started on the right side. I believe that my left side is the weakest because it has taken the major "hits" from my falls. I always seem to fall on that side. I have a hip replacement on that side, too, so I really don't want to fall. It has held up well, though. Keep up the good work and stay stable as you appear to be. Mike Gray. Guest guest
Hi Mike,I have been working out steadily since 95.Prior to PLS.I was very active played golf 4-5 times/wk.practiced when I wasn't playing, did some jogging, spent 3-4hrs./wk.@the gym.PLS has taken alot of that away.I get tired also, but I seem to have a quick recovery,in 1-2hrs. I'm ready to go again.I pace myself at the gym,for example,I'll do 30mins. on the treadmill, then do chest presses for 5-10 mins, workout with some 5lb weights,I have no problems with my arms or hands,my problems are legs, and speech, respiratory is fine.I do take a lot of vitamins, the vitamins I take are as follows.Vi-C1000mgs/day,Vi-E1000ui/day,Lechithin4800mgs/day,Creatine 5gms/day,B-6 200mgs/day,Ginkgo Bilboa200mgs/day,I have been taking them since 94. I have fallen many times, but injuries have been minor, thank God.the worst injury was about a year ago,I was carrying a paint can(with the cover on)and my cane in the other I tripped on a throw rug, extended my left arm,to break my fall and landed on my left arm,I saw stars!I ocassionally have some pain in the left shoulder, thought I wrecked my rotor cuff, but the ex-rays came back negative.I have a very positive attitude, which I feel is very important with this disease, don't you agree?I do have my moments of depression, which only last a day or two, which we are entitled too.Stay well,.
