Guest guest
Dear Friends, I think I made a big mistake. It's not that I don't believe in labels like SID or CAPD. I think they are not always given by the proper professional. Last year when started speech therapy every week we would come home with another packet of information describing another rare disorder. The truth was, was HOH and she did not make progress until she had hearing aids. I wish I could scream out to every SLP. CHECK THE CHILD'S HEARING. I want to shoot myself everytime I think of the people that tried to force my daughter to talk. I am sorry for being so upset over this issue but it really hits home with me. life has totally changed since being aided. Her doctor worked with Dr. Berlin at Hopkins as well as many famous DR.s at the Kennedy Institute. (Leo Kanner) He could not believe that anyone would even consider to have behavior problems that were not directly cause by her hearing loss. also has Super High Frequency Hearing. The buzzing that she hears are background noises like lights and electricity currents all kinds of things. Dr. Berlin over sees Dr. Ira and for the first time we are seeing real progress. I had given them all the info about it and kids with AN act like CAPD kids on occasion. Like you, I think the correct professional needs to apply the labels. Turn out Jake has oppositional defiant disorder, (worse case than his brother) and no learning disabilities....unlike what the teachers thought. Now with the CI we see that some of the behavior is lack of understanding the english language before the CI. He is still ODD but much more cooperative than pre CI. Elaine B.
