hello!

do you all think that a nephrologist would give epogen to someone with iga

nephropathy when there is 100 percent kidney function? Mine is stable but i

suffer from fatigue...

Miriam,

In my case, it was prescribed when my blood tests indicated my

haematacrit had dropped to below 34% and my haemoglobin was showing

anemia.

I doubt it very much Miriam. Epo doesn't help fatigue unless it's caused by

severe anemia. A person with 100% kidney function couldn't possibly have

anemia due to chronic renal failure.

It's very, very expensive!

Re: epogen

Hi Miriam,

There are pretty strict guidelines for Epogen. My hematocrit went down to

32

before I was started on it. It is not used for treatment for fatigue in

general, but only for anemia which often occurs in more advanced renal

disease.

You won't believe!!! My husband gives me my epo shot every weekend. 5000

units. (sounds like a lot, butit is just a little bit.) Anyway, I was picking

the serum up at the Pharmacy and the girl behind the counter didn't have a grasp

of what she was supposed to do. The bag with my other stuff in it said look in

regrigerator for other perscription. She went in there and got out a box with 8

viles in it. I thought when I saw it that it probably had the last 2 (the

number I get) viles in it and did not discover the mistake until I got home.

To say the least, they were VERY happy that I was honest! I think when I added

it up, I had $1000 worth of stuff there!

I give myself a .4cc shot every week. I use a little flap of skin

right at the top of my abdomen. A 1cc Tuberculin doesn't even

sting, particularly if you have just had a hot shower.

Your story about the incredible EPOGen gift is better than mine. I

went to pick up a prescription last year (I get 4 20,000 unit 1cc

bottles each time). There was a card in the rack that said " Get

Epogen from the refrigerator " . Stapled to the card was a bag with

the 4 vials in it. $800 down the drain. I'm sure they sent it back

to the manufacturer, but that was a truly sad waste...

I have a similiar story. I take 8000 units a week and when I went to

pickup my first dose it was for 4 10000 unit vials (4 weeks supply)

They gave me a box, I took it home and it had 10 10000 unit vials in

it, several thousand dollars of liquid gold for one $25 copay. I'm

still using them today. They don't expire for 2 years.
