Guest guest
I got some trigger point injections on Wednesday. I got three in the Thoracic Region and two in my lower back on each side. I was really sore all over Wed. night. Then Thursday mid-morning I started having severe nerve type pain in the right lower back region, down my buttocks and leg. Feels sort of like Sciatica pain but more burning/stinging. I called the Dr's office and they told me to massage that area because the medicine isn't absorbing (or something to that affect). So when my husband started massaging the area it felt like he was massaging nerve endings, I could feel it to my toes and cried like a baby. I was up all night on a heating pad and it is killing me to sit at today. I'm waiting for the Dr's office to call. I'm really scared that he might have done some real damage. Has anyone else had this kind of reaction from Trigger point injections? It hurts so badly. Thanks, Caitlin
Guest guest
Caitlin Yes I have had the same trouble you are having. My Dr hit a nerve/bone spur so the injection did not work for me. I stayed in horrible pain for 4 days with weak legs. That shot was #9 and the last one I ever had because they really never worked the way they should have. After my first injection tingling/numbness started in both legs down to my feet and I still have trouble with it as of today. I also stopped the shots because when I went for an eye exam they found that the medicine used in the injections injured my retina permanently. Now I'm watch to make sure the problem does not get any bigger because it can cause me to go blind in that eye. So your not alone with the reactions from these shots. Try icing your back, that is what I used. Well take care try laying on your side it helped me. Toni I got some trigger point injections on Wednesday. Guest guest
Caitlin, Yes, I had a know it all pain management specialist that was so confident in his messianic abilities. When I got home that night, the pain increased 10x more than it had ever hurt before. It radiated throughout my right lower lumbar, buttocks, and leg a numbing pain that lasted a couple of weeks. A couple of years later, I got another round of shots from another superstar of pain management prior to my finally getting surgery, this time on both sides with the same result. The pain lasts about 2 weeks. So, hopefully, you only have 2 weeks or less to endure it. The good news is, your gonna be ok but keep an eye on it. If any redness, intense intolerable pain, or any other side effects, contact your dr immediately. Do not rub it ! If it hurts, why rub it and make it hurt more. You have had some inflammation from the injections which happens more often than not. They want you to rub it to disperse the medication, but you are have inflammation more and it is like rubbing a place that is already sore, it is going to make it sorer. In your permission slip to do the procedure, it talks about inflammation at the injection site. You have had it. It will take awhile to heal as does any site that has an invasive procedure. Then if you are sensitive to the injection fluid, realize it's a nuerotoxin that will inflame the nerves and surrounding tissues, nerves, and whatever is in that area. You might want to try ice and benadryl, I took the benadryl to stop the inflammatory response as I think I am allergic to the stuff they inject. I just can't do these things and they were causing me more problems than what they are worth. Yes, I understand that trigger points are different than epidurals. The injection material (steroids) are the same. I had to go to the hospital once and get IV's and Benadryl through them. Good Luck, Caitlin. With the next ones, you might ask if you can take Benadryl and an inflammatory before hand. It might help. Couldn't hurt. Guest guest
I agree that heat will likely make things worse. My paperwork said ice for the first two days, then heat if I wanted. I only had facet and occipital nerve injections once and don't plan to go back. The anesthetic in the occipital did help my chronic headache for about 24 hours, but during those 24 hours after I got home every part of my body that ever hurts was exacerbated. Shooting, awful pains all over my body while I was supposed to be taking it easy. No thanks! Tim mentioned " a know it all pain management specialist that was so confident in his messianic abilities " . I laughed out loud! My trouble is mainly from C4-5 to C6-7 but this guy, looking a a two year old MRI report that was done right before neck surgery, said " I know why you've had headaches for years, and it's not what they've been saying. Trust me; I do this every day. " So, I presented with 10 years' neck pain and chronic headache and he flew off on his own tangent. Almost funny. I did also get a rather sore inflammed spot at the C2-3 injection site that was like a huge spider bite in shape. It hurt worse than the shots did! Took about a week to go away, in spite of the ice. I just looked at it as a bonus. Best health to all, in Oregon
