Guest guest
When my son was on prednisone before his transplant, it was always an every other day dose (starting at 80 mg.), and yes he had major side effects. Acne, ravenous appetite, weight gain, mood swings, lethargy, etc. etc. I¹d hate to see what it would have been like on an every day dose. Since the transplant, he has been on every day dosage but tapered down fairly quickly. Still similar side effects early on but not as severe except for being occasionally hostile and short-tempered when the dose was still fairly high. So no I don¹t think you¹re imagining it. Guest guest
Yes. Weight loss and acne. Proteninuria lowered from 300 mg/dl to 30 mg/dl and then has stopped to lower (creatinine from 1.7 to 1.5). I begun 6 moth ago with 25 mg/day of prednisolone (+Ramipril, an ACE- inhibitor), and now I take 20 mg / day. Probably I continue for the next months lowering 2,5 mg / month, because Prednisolone seem to have no more effects on my IGA, diagnosed only 7 months ago (I am 42 years old). Perhaps my nephrologist will prescribe me Cellcept, but I am not sure. Silvano > Has anyone experienced side effects from Prednisolone when they are > taking an alternate day dose? Guest guest
Yes prednisone can make you very moody, one day you can be the worst S.O.B and the next day you can be sweet as a pie. Go read the book by Eugenia Zukerman/ R Ingelfinger Book is called : Coping with Prednisone.A very informative read.
Guest guest
Hi Nick I'm on a 80mg every day dose of prednisolone, and can quite relate to your side effects...2 days of feeling top of the world followed by a few nights of no sleep and feeling very, very down for no(!) reason. Oh, and the eating enough for three people at each meal, acne, muscle loss to fast you can see it and that all so lovely round face effect we all know and love! And to top it all, I keep engaging my mouth before my brain when with people, and what I intend as a light hearted remark comes out as a terribly short insult! Luckily for me this happens mainly at my rugby club, so they just say something worse and laugh about it..the joys of being in a thick skinned community! I think most of those side effects were mentioned at some point, as I certainly don't get like that when not on them. Hopefully I'll be able to taper down soon when the proteinuria gets under control. Why not persuade someone to get you a rubber stress ball for xmas, might sort you out a treat! take it easy, Cambridge, UK > Has anyone experienced side effects from Prednisolone when they are > taking an alternate day dose? I have been trying to pump up the caloric intake recently. I guess it is frustrating on both ends of the weight issue isn't it! I hated being on prednisone so much because I got so emotional. Guest guest
A relative of mine has been on prednisone for maybe six months (not related to kidney disease at all). She didn't like not being able to put her normal slacks on because of the weight gain, but when her hair started falling out, that was enough for her. Under her doctor's instructions, she is now tapering off the prednisone. Pierre Re: Prednisolone side effects? AH!!!!!!!! Guest guest
I would expect prednisone to have an effect on heavy proteinuria, but I wouldn't expect measurable effects on creatinine. It can happen, but it's just not something that will usually cause any dramatic improvement in terms of the chronic renal failure in adult IgAN patients. A drop in serum cr from 1.7 to 1.5 is pretty meaningless - but of course, it's better than an increase. Good luck with the Cellcept if you do end up taking it. Pierre Re: Prednisolone side effects? Guest guest
Gee, the weight gain - don't even talk to me about that at the moment!! I reckon I'm probably going to put on a stack of weight with the stupid prednisolone, and I don't need that, I'm telling you. - you said you have trouble keeping the weight on - you don't want some of mine, do you?? Guest guest
Probably (but I am not a doctor) the creatinine is lower than 6 months ago, also if I am conscious it is not a relevant thing, also for a small change in diet (I no more drink milk for example - I drink tea instead, that I never drink before). An error (pardon, but my original language is Italian): not weigth loss but weight gain (the normal side-effect of prednisone) Silvano > I would expect prednisone to have an effect on heavy proteinuria, but I > wouldn't expect measurable effects on creatinine. Guest guest
Hi CC My Creatinine Clearance is in the low 30's which puts me right on the edge of stage 3, just a point away from stage 4. I think it is fairly normal as you lost kidney function to begin to have less of an appetite, and therefore more of a tendency to lose weight. For me, it is also the dietary restrictions since many of my favorite fruits and veggies are off limits due to potassium restrictions, and low protein diet. Interestingly enough, on my last visit to my neph, he said I have reached the point of really no return, and that continuing to be so strict with my protein intake is no longer necessary. Not that I can go out and eat a huge steak, but just that I don't have to be as restrictive. I think he is more concerned about caloric intake. On reduced urinalysis, I know that is true for me. I go much less often, sometimes as long as 10+ hours in between voids. But, as Pierre can tell you, even after you start dialysis, you still can continue to void, and the bonus is that you can increase your fluid intake by the amount you void over and above your allotment. Have a great day today CC.
Guest guest
, I was emotional myself. I wouldn't say that I cried during commercials but I will say that I think my wife for the first time in years wanted me to be somewhere other than at home. I think I drove her absolutely crazy although she has never admitted that to me. I hope I never have to use Prednisone AGAIN! I have been off of it for 5 months now and I have gained a total of 20 pounds. My only hope is that I can lose the weight. (Oklahoma) Re: Prednisolone side effects? AH!!!!!!!! Guest guest
, What stage are you at? I gained so much weight right before diagnosis (45lbs), the doc said this was one of the side affects of the disease, I wasn't on any meds then. Now almost three years later and they are telling me I will need dialysis by this time next year I am shedding pounds like crazy (4 pants sizes and 30lbs in two months). Just wondering if this is normal as you get closer to renal failure. One more thing, when you get to the end stages does everyone lose urination or does it vary. I have noticed that even with the water pills I am going less often and less volumn when I do go. Before it was every fifteen minutes until about 1:00 in the afternoon when the pill would begin to wear off. I love this site so much, you are all so wonderful and helpful. Guest guest
Hi CC What happens to urination as you approach the need for dialysis varies a lot. Some people urinate less and less, and therefore gain weight from fluid retention (which a loop diuretic can take care of). As I said in another message, the part of the nephrons where urine is concentrated is different than where the filtration is done. How much urine you produce depends on how much function there is at that level. This isn't really related to your % kidney function (since that is a measure of filtration, not urine production). So, some people retain more ability to urinate than others. It can be misleading though to judge by how often you urinate. It's not the timing that matters but the amount of urine in a 24 hour period. It can be interesting to measure exactly how much by doing your own 24 hour collection. No matter how much you urinate when you start dialysis, you urinate less and less after that point. Pierre Re: Prednisolone side effects? AH!!!!!!!! > , > > What stage are you at? Guest guest
Jennie, How long do you have to be on prednisolone? I feel so bad for you because like you, I also really suffered with the side effects. I hated the not feeling like my emotions were in control and I hated the insomnia too. I hope you can wean down quickly. I only stayed on it a couple of months then I told my Neph it was a quality of life issue and that I never wanted to take it again. Earlier this year, he asked me to consider trying it again, and I said I just did NOT want to unless I had absolutely no choice. I hated the stuff, and I am so sorry you are having to take it now.
