Guest guest
Shari, WV sucks... lol The job market here is bad... wages are low, but in the ton-Huntington area the cost of living is still fairly high -especially as far as insurance, medical care, and taxes go. I'm sure it's still cheaper than big cities in other states, though. If you move any where other than the ton-Huntington area -there's NOTHING. Any time I've been in other areas of the state, I wonder how in the world people get by because every where you look, there's nothing but mountains --few businesses, not many restaurants, not many places to shop, not many medical centers. ton is bad enough compared to other state's big cities, but once you get outside of ton-Huntington ---it's DEAD. A tour of our state would make people understand why our Welfare system is utilized so much, because there's just no work in most of the state. Even in this general area, I know people who drive 2-3 hours to work to make $10/hour. Our average state income is $26,000/year. Mind you, it takes highs and lows to make an average, so half the state makes under that. In the past couple of years, we've had thousands of jobs lost due to businesses closing down. The past month, we lost 300 in this area, and in October it's anticipated to lose 300 more -due to business closings. And there just aren't 600 new jobs around for these people to get. I don't know what people do. Then the good ol' government made it even worse by relocating many Hurricane Katrina refugees to WV. Why they would do that with our job market so low and our unemployment rate among the highest in the country ---I do not know. I guess if you were a professional in a certain field, it wouldn't be too bad, but otherwise --- it's horrible. You're lucky to make $10-$15/hour here. There's also little recreation here. If you don't drink or use drugs, there's little to do for fun. We do have beautiful nature scapes, but if you're not the out doorsy type that gets old. If not for my family, we'd have left the state a long time ago. Any time I look up people I went to school with, at least half have left. It will also be difficult to find medical care here for what you have. I've yet to find anyone in our medical field to have any knowledge or treat it (or even diagnose it). We were considered medically underserved until a few years ago. I'm not sure why we aren't now, because we've lost so many doctors. Our malpractice insurance is so high here that they can move one state away and make double the profit. The state won't do anything about it, so many of our good doctors have left. On the "pros" side, it is a beautiful state, and is a fairly safe state in most areas. We have bad lands, as any where else does, but in general if you move into a decent area crime is low. Our biggest problem here is meth, meth labs, and drug related homicides usually by out of state drug dealers or gangs. WV is a stop for drug trafficking in the east from Chicago, NY, Ohio, and the south. We have very cold winters and very hot, humid summers, with short spring and fall weather in between. Our humidity is usually at 100%. You can feel it hit you when you walk outside. So, if you pick WV ---scope it out REALLY well. People who live here have a hard time imagining anyone WANTING to move here! lol Brigite In a message dated 7/26/2006 10:32:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, halvey70@... writes: sounds nice Terri... about like our area.... if we need to get into a better area though we will have to get into the carolinas of virginia, west virginia, etc... these places we could have three times the home or better yet - three times the money left over.... if we were to - say move to West Virginia or some where near where he wants to, we could buy a home - probably larger than ours... our is a 4/2 - newer home... up there would be an older home but larger (sq footage wise) as it would have a basement more than likely -can't have one here... too low... most we have looked at on our trips to visit family up there are a third or less than we paid for ours - really nice places as well....most with larger yards, too. we could get the same size approx, home there and pay with the equity we have here and almost pay outright for it and have $$ leftover.... sounds crazy to me as I have always lived here but after seeing my parents new place.... well we may have to do it... anyways - gotta get to bed here good luck to all tonight!! shari
