Guest guest
The DOT EMS Instructor Training Program Student Study Guide defines the following: Education - the general acquisition of knowledge for the betterment of self. While it is an important process as it teaches problem solving and general study habits, it does not specifically prepare people for their vocations or jobs. Training - the process of acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a specific task. Training is common in industry and serves as the basis for vocational centers and on-the-job training or apprenticeship programs. With these definitions in mind, it seems we have two separate issues being debated as one. Issue #1 - How many hours does it take to produce a TRAINED paramedic? While I have not had an opportunity to attend many of the hearings, it seems the sticking point is going from 400 to 1200 hours. It would seem we are moving towards a conclusion to this issue. The final decision should be reached at the Advisory Council meeting this month. Issue #2 - Certified as opposed to licensed. We currently have both, we will still have both after all the rule changes, and while I can't predict the future, we probably will have both for a long time. Both will go to a paramedic TRAINING program and learn the same skills. They will take the same test. Those that stop here will be certified. Some may elect to continue their " education " and receive a degree. For this they will be designated as licensed. They both wear a red patch and treat patients. I will use myself as an example. I graduated from paramedic school in 1980. In 1983 I completed my academic requirements and received an AAS in Paramedicine. In 1987 I received an AAS in Fire Protection Technology. My training as a paramedic has never stopped. I attend classes as often as possible. I hope to continue my education soon and receive a BS in Business Management. Maybe this will help clarify which issue is being discussed. Randy E. FF/LP
