The sedation is usually an oral one. My hubby always insists that the child be hooked up to a pulseoxymeter (may not be spelled right - as Celeste has so wonderfully put it before, the oxygen finger-thingy). It works best if your child is tired before they give the sedative and it's a very short acting one. If the child is not tired, often it won't work and they'll give the child a stronger dose. The first time our son was given this type of sedative, were advised to wake him up at 1:00 am and keep him awake till the exam (scheduled at 8:00). ----- When Tom had his CT Scan, he was 4 and we *thought* he might make it through without having to be sedated. He did get through one " view " without sedation, but kept yawning for the second view so they had to then sedate him. They first tried a short acting type of sedative - through his nose, which was awful. That didn't work, so they went to plan B, which was an IV. It was really hard watching my baby go through all this. I say this not to scare you - it's nice that there appear to be other options. Barbara P.S. - can't believe this is Digest #300 - way to be go!
