Your doctor is seriously misinformed. Oxycontin is exactly the same drug as oxycodone. The only difference is that it has been formulated to release the oxycodone slowly into your body, instead of all at once. It makes no sense to think Oxycontin is in any way more addicting than oxycodone. Because Oxycontin can be crushed and used as a quick high, your doctor may be trying to keep you from snorting or shooting the stuff. Be aware though, if he does prescribe Oxycontin, that Perdue Pharma won its lawsuit, so there is no longer any generic version of Oxycontin. Consequently, Oxycontin is quite expensive again. I have tried Oxycontin, Avinza, and Kadian. In the end, I switched to methadone and have better, smoother relief from my pain than I had with the longer acting pain meds. Of course, if your doctor is anxious about " addiction, " he is highly unlikely to even consider methadone as a medication. -- Lyndi

But I wanted to add that the amount of oxycodone you are on is miniscule! To have any effect of any medication, you have to take a sufficient dose. It makes perfect sense to me that it isn't really helping, at that low a dose. I'm just so sorry that you can't find a doctor who knows what he's doing and is willing to treat pain appropriately. Also, the opiates shouldn't be bothering your ulcer, but they can cause other kinds of stomach problems. Oxycontin gave me very serious gastroparesis for an entire year until we finally figured it out. But I can take morphine and hydrocodone with no difficulty. If one opiate causes a problem like that, it doesn't necessarily mean that all of them will. It's worth trying a different one to see if it makes a difference. So see if you can convince your doc not only to give you an appropriate dose, but also to allow you to try another opiate to see if it helps with the stomach issues. Guest guest
Hi, Caitlin. I agree with Lyndi and Cheryl, concerning your pain doc. I know it is easier said than done, but when your doc is more concerned with " addiction " issues that you don't have than about pain management therapy, it's time to find a new pain specialist. Immediate release is not long term so know there are going to ve time periods with no relief. Bennie
